This hen is a buff Orpington. She is a very happy chicken and has had no problems in the past but all of a sudden I found her in the coop laying on her side not being able to walk. I first checked her body and I made sure there were no injuries. I touched her legs everywhere and she was very calm it seemed like she wasn’t in pain. She has been vaccinated from Mariks disease so I know it’s not that. She has been “Paralyzed“ like this for about 4 days now. Can anyone help me to why she is like this? Thank you.

Can you post a video of her trying to walk and pictures of her legs? Does it look like she is having trouble balancing, or is it actually a leg issue? Did this come on suddenly? Does she have any feeling or movement in her legs at all? I noticed from the picture that her face looks very pale, and her comb is limp. Does she have any other symptoms?

How old is she? Could she have been injured by another chicken or fallen? Can she move her legs and wings? Does she have anything else that might be important to know? I had a hen last year who was older and vaccinated for Mareks. She gradually became unbalanced and could not keep from falling backward or sideway, but had food leg strength. She recovered after 5 weeks like that, but needed to be fed 2-3 times a day, and stayed in a basket. A year went by after she got better, and she died of internal laying and oviduct cancer which may have been pushing on her leg nerves.

I would look for anything on her legs—swelling, green bruising, redness. Does she have toes curled under? Are her feet and legs moving? Is she eating and drinking? Look for any signs of mold in your feed and scratch grains.

Thanks for the reply yes I will record a video. What happens is when I try to help her stand up and let go she flops backwards. It came on out of nowhere she was ok the night before and then in the morning I came to check in on the flock she was laying on her side. Yes she has feeling in her legs I will put my finger up to her toes and she will clinch my finger. She also moves her legs almost like she is walking when she is on her side. I have been giving her vitamins to make sure it’s not a vitamin Deficiency but I don’t know how she would because In the past I have given her protein crumbles, corn, watermelon, and vitamins in the flocks water. The symptoms I see is that she can’t walk of course, she’s very tired, and won’t eat or drink anything on her own. About a day ago she went the whole day without eating even when I tried to help her, but some good news is last night I got her some mealworms and she ate about 10 of them. I put her out in the yard today to get some sun and she ate some grass as well. She does not like drinking though, but I make sure to give a special vitamin water to her.
