Help my chicken is not well!

Hi,

I'm after come urgent advice please. I have returned home from work this evening to find one of my chickens just sat looking rather still and slightly hard of breathing. I have put her on her back and examined her crop, nothing felt that unusual. There is no other visible signs of anything wrong. If you think you know what might be wrong with my 4 year old hybrid (Brownie is her name) please could you get in touch? Also if there is anything else I should check for. Most appreciated!

I am so sorry about your hen. The first thing you need to do is get her under a heat lamp. Sick birds are almost always cold. This will help her recover somewhat. Then you might want to post this question in the Emergency section here on BYC and list everything you can about her. Hopefully someone there can help you with your baby....

You will want to check for mites. Look around the vent and behind the neck for signs of bugs, red irritated skin. Could she be egg bound? You might do an internal exam. Get a latex glove and apply some KY jelly on the index finger and gently insert it into her vent. If there is a stuck egg, you will feel it there. If this is the case, you can give her a couple Tums tablets, broken up. This calcium will help to move the egg. You can also soak her lower half in warm water for 10 mins. Both of these things will help to move stuck eggs.

Has she been wormed recently? What color is her comb? How is the poop? Give as much detail as possible.

Is she eating/drinking/pooping like normal? Do you think something startled her and that is why she is so still and breathing heavier. Is she indoors or out? Any family pets that might have harassed her? Is her comb a normal color?
