Hi everyone! I have my 9 month old chicken not acting normal. I notice last week her tail was down, she wasn’t coming up to me and losing weight even tho I see her eating. She’s usually the dominant one and even tho she’s with the flock, I do notice her a couple steps behind. She has lost a lot of weight and sometimes does mouth breathing, but I don’t hear anything. She’s also not sitting up high with the other chickens at night. Just watching her now I feel like her breathing is off. She’s drinking a lot of water but also falling asleep almost in the water. She’s definitely sick! I separated her tonight and gave her recovery 911 in her water. What else should I do?
Also I did check if she was egg bound last week and she wasn’t but she has stopped laying.

Hi, and welcome to BYC!

Sorry about your hen. When chickens are molting or not feeling well, they usually won't lay eggs.

That said, her panting means she's in some sort of distress. Since you aren't hearing any rattling in her chest or seeing any other symptoms, let's try treat this as an internal egg issue for now.

Can you give her a calcium pill? The best ones are Calcium Citrate +D3 around 300 mg. She can take it whole. Just put it in her beak. If you have nothing but have Tums, those will work in a pinch until you can get some. Just break one in half and feed her one half at a time.

Your Rescue 911 is good, but sometime if you could pick up a broad range vitamin like Poultry Cell or Nutri-Drench, I'd swap over to one of those or go every other day.

Ok thank you I’ll get the calcium tablets and poultry cell. I might have freaked out and treated her for everything under the sun. I gave her a dewormer pill, treated her for mites and put corid in her water with the recovery 911. I just don’t want to lose her and I feel like I already missed precious time to save her because she was acting “normal” some days but today you can definitely see she’s sick and may not make it.

It's okay. Nothing you've given her would hurt her, and perhaps something maybe helped.
