I have a 14 week barred rock cockerel. He's not eating and won't even attempt to stand. I noticed he wasn't well a couple days ago. I assumed he injured his leg because he was limping-but when I investigated there was nothing obvious. Yesturday I seperated him from the flock and have placed in a box in our garage.

I, also, tried to get him out into the yard to observe his behavior. He got up once and limped around a little as he did he would drop his wing to the ground. Then he finallly gave up and just plopped on the ground.

Is there anything I more I can do for him? I really need some advice I've never done this before. This our first flock and I'm really attached to this bird.

Thank You!

do you have a picture of him you can post? this might help a lot to figure out what's going on?how are his legs? is one sticking out to the front or side? are his toes curled? a picture would really help. you have checked his feet and legs for any sign of injury? is his breathing normal? is his appetite still good? how are his stools? I do hope you post a picture I think it would really help. then we can get a better diagnosis. best wishes

here's the other pic that didn't post:

to answer you questions: He's not eating from what it appears. I can't get him to drink. He is kind panting a lot. His toes do not seem to be curled. There is no blood in his stool-some appears a little loose and greenish with white. He won't even attempt to stand. no signs of injury.

To update, "Rock" our Barred Rock cockerel passed away last night. He just wasted away. After he quit walkiing, he slowly quit eating, then started to get weak and pale. It took about 7 days altogether to run it's course. Could someone shed some light as to what they think might have been the cause. I'm not quite sure what to diagnosis it as.

Thanks. :(

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss

I had to put one of my hens down today. I'm afraid I have no idea except he probably either had an internal infection of some kind, something could have gone wrong with his digestive system (they have a very complicated digestive system) or something could have just been wrong internally that couldn't be helped. I live on a farm and we see a few of these "mystery" deaths where an animal just suddenly acts strange but with no obvious signs of illness (runny nose, watery eyes, stool that isnt right) we just put it down to something being wrong internally. Again sorry to hear about your loss. Are your others okay?

Two very common diseases that cause bright green diarrhea are bacterial enteritis aka Blue Comb, The Greens, and also Cholera. Cholera is caused by a bacteria called Pasteurella Multocida. At first, birds will drink more water and eat less. As it progresses, birds lose weight, become lame in one or both legs, and have difficulty breathing. Rodents and wild birds can spread it in addition to racoons, hogs, skunks, or chickens pecking on the carcass of a dead bird.
