I need help! I have a 8 month old Muscovy hen and she’s starting to act different now. So my hen, Favor, usually greets me every morning when I get the ducks feed ready, she sits on the porch rail and waits for me to give her a handful of feed, also, in the afternoon I could go outside and just hang out with her for however long I wanted and she never cared, but lately she hasn’t flown up on on the rail in the morning nor has she really let me get close to her. I did notice that she’s been hanging out with my drakes a lot. Today I saw her with my Ancona drake, Gentlemen, and she was chasing him around a lot. The weather has been going hot to cold a lot lately, could that be why she’s acting off? Could she be wanting to mate? She has paired up with a wood duck, but I think she knows he can’t do the deed. She loves her mate so much though and won’t separate from him… does anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong?!?!? Any help Is appreciated, thank you!!

Here she is on the porch rail in the morning!

And here she is… now… this was before she got very stand off-ish… she keeps doing this thing where she’s “eating air”, what’s that mean?!?!? I have seen my other Muscovies “eat air” too.

That's usually a greeting, but I've also seen birds do it in an aggressive way.
I'm guessing she does want to be with ducks that are more of her own kind. She most likely is feeling some hormones and wants to pair up, especially being a first year hen. Domestic ducks rarely pair up with wild ducks. I think that they know they're different.

Ok, so will she possibly break up with the wood duck?

She is going into hormonal age, mine make that transition around 8-9 months old when mating starts. If you didn't have drakes she would probably still be wanting your attention but since there are Drake's around she is focusing on them. I have a Muscovy female who has taken up with my Runners and Buffs and has chosen one of the Runner drakes as her beau. She doesn't sleep with the Muscovy any longer but sleeps in the Runner/ Buff house. She hatched these ducks in 2016 and decided to change nationality after that lol

Out of context, but sometimes, my favorite, really tame hen, once in a while, kind of “hates me” for about 2 days. Then, she gets friendly again. Why? I am not too worried, but why does it happen? Is it because I was wearing a jacket?
