My mom watched my kids today for the first time since I got my chickens. She knows that I don't let the kids get the hen out because I just got her a week ago. I let the younger ones we have free range once or twice a day because they are not hard to get back to the coop. Well, she let them go up there by themselves today(I never do because I know that they won't be able to resist letting them out). And to her surprise, they let her out. She couldn't catch her, of coarse. I just got home and there are a bunch of feathers where my dog is hooked up- but no chicken. Is it possible that he got a hold of her and she got away. Any suggestions on how to find her? I left the henhouse door open and plan on going up there right at dark to see if she came back. Is that a good idea. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'd go out and check around the coop when the rest of the chickens start heading in. Mine usually head back to the coop at dusk. Even only being there a week, she should know where home is.

If she was injured, she may not be able to make it back though.

I hope she is ok and she comes home!

I hope so too. She is very timid and shy and DOES NOT like to be caught, touched, held etc. Thats the only reason I'm afraid she won't come back. Shes my very first hen and happens to be an EE. She is pretty and special. Her name is AnnaBelle. The guy I got her from said she would only lay about every other day. She has laid 6 out of 8 days so shes doing better than I had thought she would. I was hoping it was because shes happier with me...lol if thats possible. Please pray that she will come back to me.

When my chicken was attacked by a hawk, it looked like a down pillow exploded all over the chicken yard.

So all I'm saying is, it might not be the dog.

I really hope you find her.

new2chooks!!!!!!! I need some encouragement jeees! lol..... I really don't wanna think about anything like that

I hope you find her okay. I just went thru this yesterday. Perhaps the dog scared her really bad and she's hiding out somewhere. Keep a light on in the coop and hopefully she'll be back at roost time.

I put the light out and she didn't come back! I'm really worried about her safety. I hope she's ok. I should have known better than to get her. She had escaped her previous owner and we had to catch her with a net just to bring her home!
