help my parents decide

My parents want some chickens. They live in north Ga, so we have hot, humid summers and chilly, but not frigid winters, with a few inches of snow and short freezing spells. They want something that lays well, large eggs, and will take the weather. Also something that free ranges well. They are planning for an economic plunge and want to go ahead and get chickens. Not interested in anything fancy, just a dependable breed, mostly for eggs.
