I need help trying to decide if his stump looks healthy or not. He doesn’t seem sick or sore and is eating and acting normal.
However, the stump is black and doesn’t seem to have any new skin growing over the stump.
Any ideas or experience with amputated toe?
Thanks, sseabass

This is Hans. I found him a week ago.

I found his toe missing a week ago
I hatched him in June.
He is very gentle.
The other two eggs didn’t hatch so hi full name is Hans Solo

That looks like an infected toe with a scab over it maybe? Have you cleaned it at all? It looks very swollen compared to the other foot..

Whenever my chickens have an open wound, I use iodine to clean it with. It's seemes to work well, as we've never had infections from wounds. Definetly make sure that no other birds are picking at it. I'm not sure what could have done that, but as long it doesnt turn green or start pussing he should be ok.

Yes. I’ve even scrubbed it with nail brush. It isn’t tender.
I put antibiotic through the day. It isn’t really soft.
Could be the scab... What you can do to help with the infection is soak him in warm (Not hot) Water with epsom salt in the water and clean it real good after a good 30 min soak and wrap it up so nothing can get in it. You can also put some Iodine on it before wrapping it to.. I'd do this every day until you see some improvement.

There's some swelling and irritation(redness) there,
but it doesn't look infected to me. You've already done an aggressive cleansing, I wouldn't do that again. Just keep it clean and dry and let it heal, it will take a while.

I put antibiotic through the day.
Are you using a topical antibiotic cream/ointment? What brand exactly? Nothing with a pain relief ingredient I hope. I'd just keep that up and if redness and swelling increase an oral antibiotic might be in order.

@casportpony @Ravynscroft take a look here?
