Last weekend I noticed my americana pullet was walking crooked, her head and neck seem to be way back, like on the side , her lower nick bone is curved like an S or C shape, almost like she has breasts, she flaps her wings and looses her balance, but I think its because she cant see to the right side of her. no mites, no cuts, I moved her neck and wings, they seem to be fine.

She eats, drinks and poo's fine, I have had her inside in a cage for almost a week, giving her vitamins and electrolites, however you spell it. and also have her on the antibiotic powder, she is still the same, not any worse, not sick, she is just topsy turvey, and her head seems like it is way back, like a side ways"S" shape with the bottom of the S being her chest and her head the top. When I take her outside on the grass to play she looses her ballance and cant get her head over to the right side of her, and she will play fly, but it is in a circle as that is the direction she sees. I wonder if she is injured, we have 15 total, 1 pullet turkey, 4 pullets total and rest are full grown hens. She doesnt appear to be sick at all. In the pic see how far her chest is out and her head is always to the left side, it seems to be the strong side and she is always catching her ballance, also her toes are fine, not curled up. I wonder If I should keep her inside in the cage or let her go back to her sisters....... we have had her since she was 1 week old, and she was fine until last week. We just (about 2 weeks ago added the 4-her included to the coop. she is about 16 weeks old??? Anyone ever seen this?

Yes I've seen this it sounds like wry neck. I've had two cases of wry neck in my own flock this last month my cases were severe first bird could only walk backwards and her head was between her legs she was doing flips second birds head was bent and
off to the side. Neither bird could walk forward. First
bird couldn't feed herself. I'm happy to say my birds
are now 100% . well the first bird is completely cured
at 100% my second bird is 95% cured and still under
treatment but is looking great. I used Alan Stanford's
treatment for wry neck and its worked so
wonderfully! Its so great to have my birds back to
health. You can Google Alan Stanford's treatment for
wry neck to get exact doses and schedules but
basically it consists of giving vitamin E small amount of selenium polyvisol liquid children's vitamin without iron and vitamin B and predinsone. Treatment will work without the predinsone if you can't find it but the predinsone takes down the brain swelling. Please look up the treatment online it really works!

It took around three weeks for my birds to heal completely. Hope this helps and if you have any questions I'll be happy to help just pm me. Your not alone. Have some patience and this treatment really works. I would separate her and bring her inside for her treatment. Its not Contagious but they need a
stress free environment away from the flock to heal.
The sooner you start the vitamins the better. Best
wishes also I know you're using vitamins but it needs to be specifically vitamin E and selenium. The selenium helps the bird absorb the vitamin E but must be given in small amounts because it can be toxic in large amounts but its a very important part of treatment also give liquid children's poly idol without iron and vitamin B this will be her treatment. If you want to supplement more you can add to their water a packet of vitamin A D E supplement mixed with a B.I got my supplements for their water from first state vet supply.I use this on top of the treatment. If you follow the treatment your bird should cure in around three weeks. Wry neck can be nutritional as my cases were lack of vitamin E or injury or heredity. It takes some time before you will see improvements. but they will come . this treatment brought my birds back from severe cases so i know it works! Best wishes and I'm here to help if any questions

I have read alot about wry neck, but they always seem to have their heads down, and I read about stargazer too and she isnt star gazing, just stuck on her left side. I did read alot about the procedure you are mentioning, and I will go out today and get the vitamin and E, I figure even if it isnt, its not going to hurt. I dont know how to get the prednisone though. Probable only through a vet. Thanks so much for taking the time to write back. I thought if I put a picture of her someone out there would know. Thanks, and I will look up the amounts to give her and hopefully she will get better!!!

Wry neck can manifeist differently in each bird as I have been unfortunate to find out with two cases in a. month. Every bird will present it differently. Some birds head is between the legs. some just have a bent neck some go off to the side. Some go almost backwards it just depends. Wry neck will not present the same in every case
Hope this helps.

Ok, Thanks so very much for all of your info. How does this happen? all of my other pullets and hens are fine. What can I do to prevent this in the future?

Realsis,i have a question for you, although i do not have any problems with wry neck,i do have silkies and from what i have read they are susceptible to it. My question is that in Canada the feed i give my girls has Selenium and vit E added to feed. Does the feed in the U.S. also contain added Selenium? Curious as to whether the added selenium/vit E actually does anything or is it along the same line as medicated feed w amprolium, which may help but in reality does very little.

Do you know where I can buy the prednisone? other than the vet???

I wish they added selenium and E in the food but my food does not have it. I'm thinking it would make a big difference.

As for the predinsone I am a asmathic and I was lucky enough to have the prescription from my doctor for myself! I know 1800 pet meds has it but the vet needs to OK it.
