I noticed my rooster starting to walk funny a week ago. Took me a day and a half to nab him and check him out, he was absolutely infested with with lice nits!! At first I thought he had just been sitting in his poop till I tried washing it off and “the poop” wouldn’t wash of and was rock hard. I started googling right away and found this thread informing my the quickest most natural way to remove them was coconut oil or corn oil and such, so when I nabbed him the second time I oiled him up and removed probably 80% of the nits the soaked him in dawn dish soap to remove the oil, dried him up real good and for good measure smeared gasoline on his legs and feet for mites. The next few days he seemed better till this morning. His waking is worse than ever! I picked him up (was easy cause he couldn’t run away) and checked him out around the vent where the infest was mainly and noticed what I can only describe as a yellow boil, I took a picture and here it is posted. He still seams 100% alert and besides his walking pretty good but I need to know what to do? I ordered invermectin and some permethrin but it won’t be here for two more days! Is this the right way to go, is there something else I can be doing or should I consider an emergency vet trip!? Please help!!!

Do you have other birds and are they also infested? Or is it mainly just him?

I would suspect there could be an underlying illness that made him more susceptible to the mites. The stress could also have triggered Mareks.

Wash his legs immediately, the gasoline must burn like fire!

Inspect his feet for signs of bumblefoot or scaly leg mites and check his spurs, they might be too long and impede proper walking.

Lol, sorry that was supposed to say Vasoline! No bumble feet but his spurs are huge! About 2 1/2” maybe 3, I didn’t know they should be kept at a certain length.

Yes I do have others, 3 and no they are nothing like him they have no nits and no mites that I can tell, seem 100% healthy

Overgrown spurs can even injure a rooster badly and not only impede proper walking but also roosting as he would be impaled trying to sit.
