Help my rooster is starting to scare me!

I love these two Rhode Island reds that I ended up with but the larger is starting to get big britches and rush me when I come to bring the girls treats.

I’m nervous and he knows it.

What can I do to help myself be ready for a confrontation without panicking and making it worse and does anyone have any pointers on how the hell I could pick him up without getting bit.

Wear pants and close toed shoes and carry something like a broom.
If you want to pick him up try it at night.

If you want to be to be the alpha chicken you must act like one. Wear jeans. If he comes toward you, go towards him. Make him back down. Put treats down but block him from getting any. Every day make him back away from you around the yard. If you back away from him, YOU lose !

I've done this many times. I like my roos to respect me, not be afraid of me.

He is about 5 months and HUGE his brother is half his width. He often gets black comb from his hormone surges I want to keep him I just got 15 chicks hoping I could get more hens for him.

As a little guy he was always very nice to e and the most curious. I have started bringing my poop scoop with me and wearing closed shoes. Thinking about maybe even gloves next time so I am more comfortable. And trying to get eggs and clean after they turn into the coop at night instead of right around 2pm. It’s manageable I just can’t visit my hens ever anymore because he’s such a good flock daddy.

I know that me being scared is probably making the situation worse than it should be or causing him to pick up on it. If he ever raises those legs at me he’s gotta go to the freezer.

I think a broom would be better- I feel like knowing I've got 5-6ft of swing length on him would make me feel more confident

His little bro is prettier besides having white underneath fluff, more lanky and less to breed standard. Also so passive but he has just started crowing and has had a super floppy comb until this ast week it really got fleshy and stands straight now. He won’t even look at me face he’s so passive. They worked out who was the alpha around 4 weeks old.

He may not calm down, and might get worse.

But, maybe it won’t get worse. Walk “through” him as suggested. Make him turn and move away from you. Yes, bring something with you bc an attacking rooster (cockerel in this case) is not a joke. I had a huge BJG rooster that didn’t like me - not sure why, but he’d come after me. Bring so large, he’d charge rather than jump or fly at me. I started to bring a rebar stand with me. Not to hit him, but used as an extrnsion of me -it would be the closest part of me to him (I’d hold it up/down, just a bit away from my body) so he would bit and attack it. He settled down (sorta) bc beak on metal wasn’t a good feeling, I guess. This rooster was very good with my kid, however!

You will find that if your rooster gets worse, you will be stressed and begin to not enjoy your chickens. If this is the case…get rid of him at that time- there is no need to be afraid of your rooster long term. We’ve had excellent ones - it makes a world of difference when you are not distressed.
