My 14 week old silkie hen got her toe injured. It’s totally my fault and I’m so upset and don’t know what to do. I’m a new chicken mom so i don’t really have a medical kit on hand yet.
Here’s what happened. I went out to check them all out for bed and put some fans in the coop because it’s hot. The coop is a resin shed for reference. Well the 5 silkies like to sleep piled infront of the door to get into the coop. When i went to shut the door to go back inside my little baby had her toe in the way and i didn’t realize it and it got jammed and she screamed. She started lifting her foot up in pain. So i grabbed her and checked and saw a little bit of blood. Very little. but under her toe looked skinned and the top of her toe is like descaled. It looks painful. She won’t walk or stand on it now.
I brought her inside and cleaned it gently with a wet tissue and i had nothing really on hand so all i could do was put some petroleum jelly on it, a little piece of gauze and wrapped it in the self stick wrap and a little piece of medical tape.

She was so stressed from the whole thing she was panting so bad and mouth open. She’s out with the others in the coop now but still won’t move. I’m just so upset i can’t believe this happened.

Please tell me what to do 😭

Not an expert but when my chick got injured some friends on here recommended veterycin (could totally be spelling it wrong). It's an antimicrobial spray that you can get on tractor supply. As long as you cleaned (I cleaned my chick's ouchie with some dawn and warm water, and stopped bleeding with flour) that would be the next step I would take

Edit: here's the antimicrobial on Amazon. I found it at tractor supply, very far back self near the other antibiotics and medicines for livestock. She doesn't look like she needs it, but better safe than sorry. Coops are filled with nasty bacteria 🤢. Also, if you feel comfortable putting her back into the coop, Make sure no one is pecking at her toe and making it worse!

I would lose the vet wrap, keeping it open to the air is best (and the other chickens might decide to peck at it). It doesn't look like an open wound so vetericin won't do much. It is probably just bruised so should feel better in a couple days, bird is probably mostly freaked out due to stress (handling, pain, separation, hot day?). At worst the blood supply was cut off long enough that the toe will eventually fall off (if it turns black and dries up that's the issue): gross but nothing to worry about (and not a high probability). You also need to relax, this isn't your fault and there's no reason to stress: it is part of life and raising livestock (or kids!), stuff happens and this is pretty minor! Just do your best and enjoy the birds:cool:
