Make sure the paper towel is not covering any spot where it might start pipping. Personally I'd remove the paper towel and wait till the duckling starts to come out and then moisten the egg membrane with your finger if you think it looks a bit dry. Or just leave it to do its own thing - after all it could take 24 hours or more to make it out so that's a lot of waiting around.

Fingers crossed for the little one!!

so if I take the paper towel out, do I not need to worry about shrinkwrapping, ??

or when it starts to come out should I just grab it out and take it into the bathroom after I've got it all steamy and sit with it in there??

thanks marsbars, this is nervewracking, I hate to quit on anything that has a chance, so I'm trying very hard for this baby, haha.

the egg is a welsh harlequin, but, if it hatches, and it's a girl, it might become a member of the family

No problem, and I know exactly what you mean. Everyone is trying to get me to cull my little duckling with a lame leg.. I think the little guy will adapt. Just keep us updated. Lol

If you are very worried about it then just sit the egg on the moist paper towel, rather than draping the paper towel over the egg. That way you will not be covering any more of the egg than you need to (apart from the bit that is already sitting on the ground anyway).

When the duckling comes out, just leave it in the incubator until the duckling is dry. Let it rest. It will be exhausted.

I know that you are really concerned to do everything that you can to help, and that is wonderful, but don't stress too much.

Keep in mind that mother ducks hatch ducklings all the time in all sorts of places and in all sorts of weather, so don't worry that humidity that is a little higher or a little lower than the ideal is going to be a 'make or break'.

Here's hoping for a good result!

I am just worrying too about the other eggs, if I put it on a wet paper towel, and the humidity spikes up, I don't want to risk the other eggs, as their lockdown isn't until May 1st.
but, I don't want to shrinkwrap this one either. Can a duck hatch at 50% humidity ???

I will for sure, it was just making a ruckus in there, sounded like it's losing its voice, poor little gaffer.
