help, need info on a pigeon

hi, well about an hour ago a messenger pigeon flew into our chicken pen. he has 2 rings on his leg, one says aus 08. he ate and is resting. he is lovely with white around his beak and seems very friendily and used to people. i dont know any thing about them, should i keep him or let him go when hes ready, he ate ok and looks very healthy, is he on his way somewhere or maybe lost! any ideas would be helpful thanks.

The bird is lost or just needed to stop to rest, let it eat and drink for a few days then it should be ok to release it. If it is an AU band, you can go to www.pigeon.org they have what club the bird is registered to according to what letters are on the band....since this bird is an '08 bird, it is probably lost from an old bird race, since it is old bird racing season right now.

thanks again, i was able to locate its owner, i am going to keep him for 3 days to rest and let it go to get home, its about 500 miles from its home! thanks again i knew the kind people here would be ale to help with the right info, of course now i want one!!!

Neat, to get that info, wish more people would do that. So many think its ok to keep these high dollar birds. They do stop to eat or drink during the race.

Most are very tame and very easy to catch. I have had birds returned from 10 mile from home, that had travel 300 miles.
