I don't have a chicken rescue, but all of my birds will live out their natural lives in my care and retire and not worry about going into the stewpot after they stop laying. What kind of chicken momma would I be if I ate them.

a farmin' kind? lol. I know what you mean though. I couldn't do it either. (but i bet you and I both could if we were starving!!) I admire ppl who are able to farm and raise their own food (meat included!) And don't worry...I don't think that chickens worry.

I believe that I would have to starve before I killed my pets. Before we got chickens (for their eggs) my mother-in-law was like "it will be nice to have fresh chickens without all of the hormones and anitbiotics forced fed to the ones we already eat." Well I told her that if she planned on eating them then we couldn't have them. (they are raised at my house and she lives like a mile away and wouldn't be able to care for them adequately) Anyways she decided that the fresh eggs would be better than nothing. My mom grew up with her parents (my grandparents) killing what they ate. She couldn't eat the animals because she helped to care for and feed them and even named them. Maybe you are right that they probably don't worry, but I tend to thing they do only because I love them so much.

You could also post an ad at your local tractor supply or equivalent. I know ours has a big board for people to post stuff on they are selling or looking to buy.

BTW, I got rid of my 3 packing peanuts on craigslist to someone local who was looking for a few roos to expand their hatching egg production, gave them away for free, guess I was just lucky though.

I take mine to the feed store and trade for whatever I need...a feeder...some layer pellets. The lady is always glad to have them!!

Don't get me wrong...I love my babies also! I was lucky to find a home for my extra buff orp roo. I was on a local chickens group site and noticed someone was looking for a BO roo. He has a wonderful new home with lots of ladies. So maybe not only advertise you have them, but searching out someone who is looking for them helps alot.

I was sent 17 roosters as packing peanuts lol - i called around the feed stores in my area, no luck - i think they thought i was a bit mad, but then i packed them up in a box, and took them to my local feed store - independently owned - TSC won't take them, they have "policies".
I opened the box in the feed store and showed them the chicks, and that they were all pure bred, and they were happy to take them.
