Help... need to make a decision in regards to my Golden.

one more thing. i forgot to tell you

i dont know how long its been since the "tango" possiblity. but the male dogs sperm can be stationed in the cervix area of the female for sometimes four days or more.

that is how a single dog can have puppies out of the sam e litter from two different dads.

some sperm from dad number one get it on day one , when shes tangoed with someone eles on day two, some of day ones sperm are still waiting, so there is a chance that both male dogs sperm gets to fertilize eggs!!

thats how someone can have a full blooded lab mated with a full blooded lab (and the neighbors sheperd gets in the fence and mates with her too)

you have not only full blooded lab puppies, but also lab/sheperd pups.

same with cats, however cats sperm stays in the cervix area alot longer!! so they can have four of five different dads.

opps, so what i was trying to say, is that if she was even infact pregnant. it wouldnt happen till the end of her heat cycle anywase. so its not like ur aborting anything. you wouldnt be. and if you waited a while after her heat cycle is over the babies wouldnt be embryos yet, just something called a zygote.

I would contact your local Humane Society and they have certificates you can purchase for $40 and a list of vets who participate. IF not the humane society should do it for a low cost. I haven't paid full price for a spay yet. There are even other programs who give discounts if you can find them.

Here's info on the 'shot' they used to use. I have always heard from dog show people that if you have an unintentional pregnancy in a dog, and you don't want to spay her (ie, want to use her for breeding in the future) then it is safer for her to carry the pups to term than to have this shot.

There is also an abortitive procedure/meds they can give to the dog, but they are given much further along in a pregnancy - basically like inducing premature labor, delivering the pups which won't survive the premature delivery. I should also edit to add there are different procedures that can be used - some just blight the embryo and the mother's body will reabsorb it - depends on how far along the pregnancy is as to what methods are used, and none of them are cheap.

Personally, I'd get her spayed.

WARNING: THE “MISMATING SHOT”

In older times, one could bring the mismated female dog to the vet for an injection of estrogen within the first few days after the mismating. This treatment is generally not recommended any more as the high doses of estrogen used predisposed the female to life-threatening uterine infections (up to 25% incidence in one study). Dangerous bone marrow suppression is also a possibility plus the estrus (and all the unpleasant vaginal discharge and attraction of males) becomes prolonged. This treatment has been deemed too toxic and should not be requested.

There are a couple vets in my area who participate in the Friends of Animals voucher... I'm going to give them a call and see what they can do. $90 for the spay, I don't think I have to get her tested for anestetia(sp?) she already had that last month for the quills. But her being in head and the other meds... even if it comes to $200 it'll be better!

Looking at the crew in your siggy line, you need puppies like I need another hole in my head. I'm glad you're checking into spay resources. I think you'll be very grateful that you did.

Mycookoonest, you need to sit down and really think this thing through. Try your best to think with your head, and not your heart.

Here are some things you need to think about.

You're pregnant, when are you due? Your dog's gestation period, if she is pregnant (and she probably is) is 63 days. Then you're going to have active, MESSY puppies for at least 6 weeks. Are you going to be available to fully devote yourself to your dog and her puppies? Puppies are A LOT of work for us humans! Your dog is going to be very loving and devoted to them at first, for the first 3 weeks or so. Then she is going to stop cleaning up their messes and you're going to have pee pee and poo poo EVERYWHERE. When she starts weaning them and you have to provide them with mushy food, they're going to walk all through it and smear it EVERYWHERE. You will amazed at the amount of MESS puppies make. Take if from me, I took in a stray dog who was in heat. When she had her puppies, a small litter of only 4, I swore off ever going through that experience again.

I'm a Christian and I don't believe in aborting humans, but God gave us dominion over the animals and if taking care of puppies is going to be too much work for you, I don't see anything wrong with spaying her while she's pregnant. If that is the decision you make, I would just do it as soon as possible. And I completely agree with everyone else who said to shop around for a cheaper vet! Contact your local SPCA and see if they offer any kind of spay voucher or can refer you to a discount spay program.

Best wishes to you with whatever you do.

I'm a vet tech too, and hospitals do in-heat spays all the time. Usually there is an additional fee for in estrus grump, and then an even higher fee for in whelp grump. Size of the dog matters too, and Goldens are usually up there. If you spay her this week, it would be no different than if she was simply in heat, (ie not pregnant).

I honestly have to tell you that MANY people bring in in heat cats and dogs a couple of days after *she found a boyfriend*. I am actually very very glad when people do this, because although they were irresponsible in letting their dog/cat get into that situation, they face the situation and fix it before new unwanted lives start. It breaks my heart when people want the spay when their animal is very pregnant (which hospitals do, and its up to the vet performing the surgery to how "far along" the puppies are before they say no to a spay/abortion. I heard heard many vets say they will do it up to the point where the puppies can survive outside the mom.) It breaks my heart even more with the amount of how many unwanted animals that are euthanized every year simply because they have no home. And unfortunately large breed mixes are they hardest to place.

Money wise, the quote you got for a starting price is a bit high. I realize you are in NY, but I'm in CA and things are costly here too. I work for one the the most expensive hospitals in my area and spays start off at $275, which includes all to go home meds and supplies. make sure you ask what the spay includes because many hospitals will tack on more fees on top of the price quoted. FOr your large breed girl (70-90 lbs?), in-heat, expect to pay about $400-450 (for everything). It will be somewhere around $100 more for her being in heat.
If you do the math, getting the spay now will still be way cheaper than paying for all the supplies for the puppies PLUS the "normal" spay when mom is ready. PLUS, you are avoiding other situations, like C-sections which are seriously $10,000+ if done in the middle of the night at emergency vet hospitals.

P.S. If you honestly do the within the next few days, there is no reason for the hospitals to charge you for a pregnant spay, just tell them she's in heat. AND make sure you get all the extra care you can (DO NOT pass on getting her IV fluids if for some reason its an option- she will really need it for the extra blood loss)

P.S.S. Do not get "the shot" its really dangerous
