I hot glued a small diameter piece of PVC the same length as the carton to the center bottom of my egg cartons to make them easy to turn. It's an idea I saw here to BYC.
I dont have a problem with the paper egg carton acting as a wick for the humidity. They sit in the refrigerator section at the store.
But I have always been told by the Old Tymers never, ever put a hatching egg in styrofoam.
I know I get eggs in plastic bubble wrap, and in foam egg cartons and they hatch just fine
But thoses voices are in my head....paper only, paper only.

I just took two kitchen spoons put them on their sides and would hook the egg carton over it and lean them inward toward the center of my incubator. To rotate them I would just flip the carton and put the other side down. I had one spoon on each side to support different cartons...
I like what I have come up with if you look at the pic on the last page. I am comfortable with the fact that most of the eggs are basically able to lay down being bantam eggs in a regular extra large egg carton wells, but the ones with the really jiggly air sacs are able to stay at a slight angle and won't get knocked to weird by other hatching chicks. The rings that are left of the carton are at most 1/4 of an inch except for the center parts. I can't wait to see how the hatch works out. If you look back at page one you will see where I cut the cartons way down and wired it on.
As for the Styrofoam, I would be afraid of what toxic stuff it could give on when it gets warm or hot. But if you haven't had any ill effects of it, there goes that theory..
hmm, worth considering on the styrofoam, but my eggs are already in lockdown, i put half of them in a carton, and half snuggled in rows within a couple dish rags. i've never done the carton hatching before, and i wanted to at least try it this time. so, only time will tell....it almost seems harder waiting for them to hatch once you put them in lockdown, than it does once you set them on day one. i find myself looking at them with a flashlight (through the window of the bator)....just staring at them, and they're on day 19....why am i staring? i know they won't hatch yet, i don't expect to see anything yet....so why do i stop and just LOOK at them?

What day are yours due to hatch? Mine are going to hatch out either Wed or Thursday...
I know what you mean I know they are not about to hatch, but I too keep going to the incubator and staring in with an expecting heart.. But I know they won't hatch for another day or two... This is as bad as waiting to go into labor.. any day now.. any day.. breath breath... go for a walk.. breath breath...
