I have a hen that has diarrhea and has been acting lethargic. She drinks and drinks and drinks until she can't hold anymore and then spits some up. I just got some probiotics and electrolytes. Should I give her antibiotics? HELP ASAP! Not sure what to do called the vet he said he knows nothing about chickens.
Thanks

Welcome to BYC. How old is she? Have you noticed any wet or moldy conditions in or around your coop that could cause aspergillosis, a fungal infection of the lungs that can affect other areas of the body? How does her crop feel now, and then again first thing in the morning? Is she standing hunched or puffed up? Does the vomited liquid smell sour or bad? Have you seen any blood in her droppings?

Her breath does not smell bad. Her crop was super full and watery last night. Still full this morning with water. I think she has sour crop. I gave her electrolytes, probiotics, plain yogurt and wine. It said online to do all these things. No food. Her poop is back to normal and her crop feels small like a golf ball instead of a baseball. I think she is getting better. Thinking of giving her eggs and more yogurt. Any information helps.

Nystatin drops, fluconazole, which are both prescription drugs, and Monistat cream or suppositories are sometimes used by chicken owners to treat sour crop from a fungal infection. Sometimes it can be bacterial. A vet probably should be consulted if possible. Here are some good links to read about crop problems:

Since she is getting better you can give her this mix...

- 1 hard boiled and crushed egg (with shell) mixed with 2x more plain natural yoghurt
Make sure she eats only about half of it, and in a few hours check if it's still in her crop. If it has gone down then you could give her the rest.
