can anyone tell me the cause to this? Yesterday the chicken appeared healthy, running around, eating, drinking. Today I have found it dead with a big hole to the rear. This is an Araucana approximately 6 month old

I’m so sorry you had to witness this horrible site, sorry for your loss...

Was there no blood?
That looks like she was ripped open , I wonder if trying to carry her did that ?

No there was no blood, this is how we found her on the coop floor and there was a terrible smell.

Check to make sure there is no way into your coop. Lock them up safe every night.

I’ve never seen this before

im not sure it’s a predator, there’s many other hens in the same coop without any damage. Although it does seem strange that she appeared healthy yesterday so possibly could be a predator. Thanks

You’re right .. why only one?

Let’s hope others chime in with their wisdom soon, the bad smell is a clue.

Make sure to really clean the coop if you don’t know what was wrong with her

Yes already disinfected the coop. Let’s hope we can get to the bottom of it. Thanks again
