Help needed

Isn’t this rupture too high up for ascites?

Was there a water belly visible? You would have noticed this I’d think ...

Is there any air coming in or out of the wound? The yellow material almost looks like egg matter. If it smells bad, it may be an infection. The yellow matter could also be caseous or pus matter from somewhere, possibly the air sac or elsewhere. I think the lungs are located up next the the back. I think this probably requires vet care. I would use some Vetericyn spray on it for now. Perhaps someone else who has seen something similar will chime in.

Okay so I couldn't find my copy of Storey's guide to Raising Chickens, but in it there is a section on predators and, if I remember correctly, their calling cards (one of which did include what your bird looks like). I'll keep looking for the book, but if I can't find it you also might want to check if you have foxes around. Apparently they smell like a cross between a skunk and a wet sock
