Help! Neighbor's rooster tormenting my girls.

One Chick Two - thanks for the "roo-whispering" tips! I definitely don't think the roo was well socialized living next door. We do plan to work with him a bit...my husband is building a small pen for him right now so he can learn he has a new home base. I hope it all works out. I can't imagine this gruff roo giving out hugs, but stranger things have happened!

Centrarchid - just wanted to thank you for your posts & let you know that your information has helped me.

I am adopting a rooster that was found basically drowning in a pond at a local park. It was pouring rain, he was soaked to the bone & cold. He was in water up to his chest, his wings were out to the side, and his head was droopy - it was only a matter of time. But he was pulled out of there about 10 days ago & has been staying at the local wildlife rescue & rehab place. They've nicknamed him HuggyBear because he's such a love bug. I've visited him for the last 5 consecutive days & each day, I hold him for a good hour & he falls asleep in my arms. Very relaxed.

I'm not so much worried about crowing - right in my immediate neighborhood, there are peacocks, guinea hens, roosters, chickens, dogs & horses.

What I AM worried about is this guy getting to my property & making a mad dash for the back 40 . . . or even the road. So I liked what you said about putting the rooster in an enclosure & letting him imprint on the area. I'm hoping that works.

Also, just as a point of info, he will be the only chicken on the property. I had an Ameraucana for 3.5 years, and I'm telling you - she was the love of my life - my best friend. We did everything together. She developed egg yolk peritonitis & when she didn't eat for 3 days, it was time to put her to sleep. That was only 8 days ago. And this rooster was picked up the day before My Girl was put down. So I'm hoping it works out with this guy. I never heard of a rooster that would fall asleep on someone's lap for an hour at a time, so I'm hoping that's a good sign.
