Help! New chick just hatched and...

I really hope it all works out. I say just leave her alone and keep her warm and in the teacup. Keep us posted be I think you should prepare yourself for the worst....

She is cozy and warm in her teacup - very active though, she acts like she could just jump right out of it.. Gonna be a looonnnggg nite...

I know there are going to be some that can't be saved, but it's still hard to watch.. She seems fine except for that dang blood bubble! I'll keep you all posted..

That bird is dying. You can leave her in the bator to die or have someone euthanize her. She will not get better. She just hatched too soon. I wish you well with your other hatchlings.

I am not an expert, but could that be a second chick that never developed? A double yolker with only one chick developing. Like I said I'm not an expert, and I hope this doesn't sound stupid. Maybe there is a chance for the chick.

It looks like yolk, but could be intestines. I agree it doe snot look good. If she seems to be in pain I would cull her. I've only had to cull once, a turkey poult that had a similar issue. His yolk looked much smaller but he was attached to the egg shell by a LARGE blood vessel. He drug it around and was panicking, so I tied the vessel off and cut it on the egg side to release him from the egg. I think the traction though caused his guts to fall out, basically. The sac grew bigger and he got really wiggy. He was in obvious pain. Of course if you can keep your baby calm, there's a chance it will absorb the yolk in a few hours if it's yolk and not intestines. Keep the humidity up too to keep it from drying out. do not in any circumstance try to cut the sac away. It will bleed to death quickly if you do...unless you plan to cull, you might use that as a method.

I don't mean to upset you, but if you do need to put her down some people say use sharp scissors to cut the head off. I wasn't able to do that, just because I'm a wimp I guess. I had heard somewhere thaat for small animals if you put them in a plastic bag and hold it up to the exhaust on a car they will just go to sleep. I tried with my Tiny Turkey and it was HORRIBLE...so horrible that I took him and used the shovel. One of the hardest things I've ever done, but his death was instant that way. I sobbed and still feel horrible, but he was in so much agony I had to do it.

If it was me, I'd watch it. Keep it in a tea cup like you have it, high humidity, let it rest and hope the sac starts to shrink as it's absorbed. If it continues to get bigger I would consider letting her go.

I'm so sorry you're facing this.

OH goodness that poor thing. That doesn't look good at all. It looks a LOT like the chicks that died at lockdown. When I cracked their shells to see how far along they were they had their yolk sack attached to them. It seems as if it had tried to absorb it, and it has fallen back out? Poor you!! It is so hard to see them sick or dying. I hope your little one can make it.

Keep us posted. It really doesn't look good, try not to touch it and try to keep it from rupturing (sp?) or getting pulled off. I don't think she'll make it. don't get your hopes high.

I had a boy like this and I was scared to death aswell. It was a bit more yellow and he lived, he lived to become a friendly rooster. But I'm not quite sure about you're little one.
