Help - new chicken mama

As @backyardpeepers suggested, training them for the sound of feed or a treat is an easy way to call them. I use the same call every time I bring them something, and they sure know what it is! I've read some folks get a can with scratch grain in it, and shake the can. Loud and to the point!

My chicks are terrified of anything new. When I introduce them to the coop, I fully expect them to be scared to leave it, and I know that it's roomy and well-ventilated, so they will be happy in there for a few days.

Going out to the run will be scary, the first few times. Shoot, chicks are scared of everything unfamiliar, including treats until someone works up the courage to try it!

Makes sense. But I still don't think it is a good idea.

Obviously you can handle your flock as you see fit but I've always locked my chickens in to "home" them to the coop and it does work well, provided the coop is spacious enough. Much less stressful on both me and the chickens - no need to chase them around.

If chickens aren't wanting to use the coop, it's not because they're scared of being locked in, it's because something(s) isn't to their liking.
