Hello! I just brought home 8 chicks and I am in need of help. The heat lamp, it's a 250w , it's about 20-24 about the chicks. They are one week old. Do I keep it on all night?? I'm keeping them in the house.

Keep a heat source available for them all the time, although that might be too hot for them in the house. If you have a lower wattage bulb you could substitute. Either way, just watch how they're acting. If they're squished against the sides of the brooder then they're probably too hot and you should raise the heat lamp higher. If they're all crowded under it you can lower it because they're too cold.

But, yes, keep it on all night.

Good luck with your new cuties!

You can use your bulb as long as you have it high enough. Don't feel you have to switch it.

Very young chicks usually start with 95 degrees at the brooder floor level. Each week you lower by 5 degrees (move light further away) until they are fully feathered out and ready to be in the outside coop.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Chicks need heat on them all the time. So yes, leave the light on or provide them with another source of heat during the night.
