so i dont know what to do. i just got these young pullets about 11 weeks old. they were very quiet on transfer to my crate. the woman told me that her childred play with them alot. and i thougght ok thats good. we got them and went home. it was dark and they seemed fine to me. i got them home and feed them and gave water (i was told they only feed twice a day so they would be hungery). they just layed in a pile. they peeped somewhat and a few raspy breathing. i heard some sneezes and i sat to listen. one was sneezing alot and stretching neck and rustling feathers out. i gave some antibiotics and wrote this email the the people i got them from. i am pretty upset. they are segregated from my flock and i havent directly touched them. im scared for my girls to get sick. wehat could it be? what should i do? could they be allergic to hay? i need some help.

what i said:
are you aware these birds are ill? they are terribly conjested and sneezing like crazy. darkly colored americana is sneezing and stretching out her neck strangely. they dont want to eat or drink. what does the rest of your flock look like? im concerned for the rest of them. if they look like this in the morning i would like my money back. did you travel with them in the bed of your truck? they may have hypothermia. im very concerned. they are all huddled up and didnt even get up when i moved the carrier. i dont want to touch them and give soemthing to my hens i already have. it is unethical to sell sick animals. i hope you make this right if they look the same in the morning

what he said:
They were not sick. Our flock is fine. They were in the cab of the truck. We have not put them in hay so perhaps they are congested from the hay. We would not sell sick birds. We have been selling for a long time. Putters wasn't any sneezing when we gave them to you. Let me know how they are in the am.

Were you not able to see their parent stock or how they were kept before buying? Did you do a thourough check on them before buying? Listening to them checks for signs of illness? Im glad you separated them as new birds should never be introduced to the flocks without quarantining form30+ days. Take care of your birds first..then the sickly ones...change shoes when returning to your original flock and clothes....hope it is just stress and the birds perk up ..watch for bubbly eyes...swollen eyes...watery poops....they may not have had signs of illness as they could be carriers of something and the stress of being moved had created a weakened immune system bringing out what they might have :(

was not able to see parent stock. theyt live far from me to they offered to meet me half way. it was dark so i could not seem them great but look ok. the only thing i noticed off was that they were very calm on loading them into my carrier which usually they are running arround squacking but the woman assured me that her childred played with them all the time and were just calm birds. i called and spoke with the man and his wife and gave me their home address. i did not speak to references or anything.

one is dead this mornign the one that was stretching out its neck and sneezing and ruffling feathers. the other sound girgly but are at least eating and drinking. i want to return them. could hay kill a chicken?

Mold spores can...old hay?

they hay is from last years crop. it seems fine i check it regularly and there is no evidence. my goats are eating it with no problum and they can be picky

so i inspected the chickens further and i noticed one has a bubbly eye, it is pretty gross. what is this sickness? what can i do for them? the guy said he would let me return them but he is insisting that his flock is not sick. which these birds anyway are defently sickly.

Some sort of respiratory infection...I dont know which kind;( hard to say as alot have the same symptoms...i would return them and totally clean scrub and dissinfect where they were being held...Then leave that spot empty for a few weeks just in case to kill any lingering issues...thats just me and my opinion;( again Im sorry...

On another note...the guy might not even know his birds have something and they could appear to be totallly healthy...its when the birds are put ina stressful situation that will bring the illness out...like traveling..movement..new places etc....

I would return the birds ASAP or Cull. Like Sonew said, DISINFECT! Everything, including your shoes. It sounds like Coryza but I am not really sure. Mold spores in hay can cause sickness, but I have never heard of one dieing that fast from it. I'm sorry this has happened to you, some people will sell sick birds though. We Flea market hop in the summer and I am always getting mad about seeing sick and mistreated birds and animals.

i have left them in the large dog crate so have not come in contact with them except with my hands picking them up but i did take my sweather off and used gloves to not tough them with anything but the gloves. the guy has not answered me back yet today (i messages him yesterday but he said it was his kids birthday). i do not want them here any longer. what is suggested i do with the dead one? burn it right?
