Just had my first ever hatch tonight! Two chicks hatched within a few hours of each other. I removed them after a while as humidity was so incredibly high they couldn't fluff up. When I removed them I added a wet sponge to ensure humidity didn't crash. Regardless the third chick, that had externally pipped and zipped half way, but had not been progressing at all became stuck and exhausted. I could see the membrane from outside and it looked incredibly dry. The chick was trying to hatch, but the zip was incomplete! After a number of hours and as the chick was getting weaker, I wet the uncovered membranes with sterile water and unzipped the rest of the shell (without breaking the membrane). I placed the egg back in the incubator and lo and behold the chick 'hatched' within seconds. However its bum is sticking out a tiny tiny tiny bit and there is what seems like half a drop of blood on it. The chick has smudged the paper towels at the bottom of the incubator with a little tiny bit of blood too. it does seem a tad weaker or more exhausted than the others at this point as well. Should I leave it in the incubator to rest on its own for a bit despite the high humidity? What on earth could this bum thing be and how do I help?! The other chicks are in the brooder all fluffed up, warm and chirping happily away. I just don't know what to do about this poor chicken and would really appreciate any advice or pointers!

Blood loss in a chick can be extremely detrimental, as they are so small. If you have stop bleed powder, or dog/cat nail stipnic, dab a little on a q tip, and quickly take her out, dab a bit on the bleeding spot, and put her back.
If you don't have styptic/stop bleed, use corn starch, or flour.

This happened to me recently. I helped a chick unzip, and it hatched with a blood bubble on its bum, because it wasn't ready to hatch yet. The chick needed more time to reabsorb; I was just so worried. Regardless, I used vet wrap and gauze to make a tiny diaper, so that it wouldn't pop or bleed. The diaper stuck to the blood bubble and it was super hard to remove; other people made "cup diapers" to protect the chick, or find a way to separate her so the others dont peck it.
Since she has an open wound, be sure to cover with triple antibiotic once it stops bleeding.
I hope she makes it :hugs:fl

Can you lower the humidity? Do you think the little thing that is sticking out of her bum is the umbilical cord?

You might have to put up a little barrier when you put her with the other chicks so they don’t pick that thing on her behind. I think what you are talking about imight be the umbilical cord. Do you have a photo or can you look this up on the Internet and see if it looks similar to what your chick has?

Thanks so much guys! I'm out of my mind with worry for this chick!

Raptorchick when you say a blood bubble is it kind of like the picture I've put up? Aaaaah so people put them in the brooder with the others versus separate them? No I have no stop bleed :( I can however go to a pharmacy and find some if that would help her!

(That's the blood smudge btw on the paper towels, it's smaller than it looks, but still)

SurferchickinSB what does the cord look like?!! Does it look like the picture I've uploaded at all?! I have zero idea to be honest...

Yes! I did lower the humidity in the incubator a little. The paper towels were soaked, I changed them, dried the incubator floor, wet the visible membranes of the other eggs with a tiny q-tip dab with some sterile water just in case they have the same difficulty (though they've only pipped versus half-zipped), and put the chick back in. Humidity is 78% now, it was 99% before which is just surreal and had never happened before!

That's the bit sticking out of its bum; I hope the pic makes a bit of sense?

I have never seen one except for pictures on the Internet. Hopefully one of the really experienced chicken people on here will answer that question. That was just my thought about what it could be.

If it is the umbilical cord, I think it should dry on its own and just fall off, don’t pick it. The one thing you need to do is keep her separated from the other chicks. It will be best if you keep her in the same brooder, so if you can just tape up a piece of hardware cloth, she will still be in the company of others.

Every time an egg hatches the humidity will spike. Settle down and relax it’s normal don’t start changing things. Also another good example of why you should not assist the chick. I have had some take over 24 hours from pip to hatch. I wouldn’t worry about a small amount of blood if the bleeding has stopped. Between the unbiblical cord and other floods you may be over reacting. Kick back and let nature do as it should. Well kinda just with an incubator.;)

Thanks SurferchickinSB! No no I'm not picking anything! I'm leaving it as is! Trouble is she's not fluffing up in the incubator as humidity is still quite high at 78%, but that's better than being with other chicks in the brooder I guess...

This one had taken 24hours from the external pip RoosterML! It pipped last night, then half zipped today and then got stuck re the dry membranes. But I hear you re not worrying about the blood, thank you!! I've taken another picture and think the bloody bit can be seen more clearly there. Does that look like the umbilical cord?!
