what does everyone feed their chickens for special treats? I'm a first time chic mama
Just a few,
Rice krispies or Cheerios
Apples slices (WITHOUT SKIN!)
And probably more!
Welcome to BYC, glad you joined us.
Mine like black oil sunflower seeds, meal worms, tomatoes, bananas (no peeling), kale, (and watermelon in the summer).
Mine go crazy over mealworms, tomatoes, watermelon and sprouted wheat. Though truthfully they mostly like everything, lol.
My chickens LOVE watermelon (Make sure they have some protein with it)
they also like Grapes and crackers and strawberries and a whole lot more! Chickens will eat just about anything!!
I usually throw some vegetable scraps out there for them. They've gone nuts over carrots and blueberries/strawberries so far.
Mine love live mealworms, cantaloup rinds, tomatoes, cucumbers. I got dried mealworms and they liked them, but they go nuts over the live ones and cantaloup. I want to get them some crickets too.
Watermelon looks like it's a big hit with chickens. Mine love it too!
Cooked Sonny boy cereal.
Apples minus the seeds
Cooked pasta with peas and corn
wild bird seed
Basically chickens can eat what you eat. Minus the frogs and wild bird seed.
First of all, chicks don't NEED treats. A complete starter ration is the best way to go. While they will eat most of what has been suggested if chopped up finely enough, all but the mealworms and frogs will lower the overall crude protein percentage and be a negative in nutrition rather than a plus.
