NOt sure what to do, leave it there? Will they know what to do? I do not know which hen laid it. I don't even know if it is fertile or infertile. Do I eat it... lol or wait to see if it hatches? Can anyone help me and give me pointers?
I know the chickens are mating so Im not sure what type of egg it is. Do you all eat both types??
Thanks,LOri

YAY! Your first egg!! That is always so exciting!

If they just started laying it isn't likely that anybody would be broody yet. You might as well bring the egg in the house and eat it. I always wait for a hen to be broody before giving her eggs. Otherwise you waste a lot of eggs.
To check for fertility, crack the egg on a plate and look for the little white dot. If it has a ring around it like a bullseye, it is fertile. If it's just a dot it is infertile. There is a sticky at the top of one of these forums that shows pictures. It's very helpful.
Even if it is fertile you can eat it. Doesn't taste any different.

Congrats on the egg!!

Eat it. There's no difference in eating a fertile vs. non fertile egg. Also, if you want to hatch chicks, you'll want to wait until the girls are older. Everything I've read says that for the best chicks, you don't want to hatch pullet eggs, so wait until they are about a year... yay for eggs!!!

:)Thanks everyone for your help. Ok, we'll eat the eggs... This is all so new I need to read more about all this egg buisness...
