Hi,

Everything was going great with my 6&7 day old chicks... then I noticed that one of my chicks was sleeping a lot.. (was still running around, flying chirping).. So I picked him/her up and saw 2 big clumps of poop on its bottom. I don't know if it is really pasty butt because it wasn't blocking. I cleaned some of it off and figured the other pieces would just dry off? Then I picked up the other chicks and a couple of them have poop sticking their butt also. What am I doing wrong? Never had this issue before. I'm getting really nervous now because that one chick had been sleeping a little bit more than the other but I figured he/she was just tired because it was still acting normal. Should I just put some Vaseline on their bottoms to keep it from sticking? One of them is also having loose brown stool...

It just happens with some. At least one in every batch would have pasty butt, we just got into the habit of checking and cleaning a few times a day. Vaseline might help, or just make whatever litter you use stick to butt too. We've clipped the feathers around vents at times. But nothing works like a cotton ball soaked in warm water. It doesn't last too long, really.

I think it just happens sometimes. I would just wash off their bottoms as needed. I have had chicks that this has happened to before and had to wash them off and eventually the pastybutt just stopped.

Wash off tehir bottoms in warm water and get it all off...then put vaseline or clear A&D ointment on their bottom--this helps keep the poop from sticking!
