Sorry for all the posts but I don't know what to do here. I have a chick that pipped about 5 am today and it got rid of some of the shell (about the size of a quarter) but it has its beak poking through the membrane and hasn't broken through the membrane.
Should I help it??? How long should I wait until I help it

Helping it shouldn't harm it in any way; however you should wait a bit and see if it can get out by itself.

My guess is that it'll be fine getting out without the help, but if it is still having problems, helping is alright as well.

Thank you, it is hard to watch it struggle for so long. I will wait some.

When that happens in my incubator I just watch the membrane to see if it's drying out too much, making it too tough for the chick to peck through. If it starts getting opaque I just wet it with a little warm water on a Q-tip, or put a damp paper towel over it.

It's hard to know when to help & when to sit on your hands...

I just had this happening. Mine though had pipped all the way around and then was stuck because the membrane had dried. So I peeled the top off and put in back. In practically popped out in my hands. I have other times when pipped chicks have pipped and just keep making the whole bigger but not zipping. I usually give them 24 hours after that, then help. During whick I raise humidity as much as I can.

Well, I helped it out. I hope it will be ok. I kept waiting for it to bleed (I have read stories about that) but it did good.
The membrane was thick! Really thick. It does still have some yolk sack and it is noisy!!
I guess I will see in the morning, but so far it looks like it will make it.
Thank you everyone who helped and encouraged. I appreciate you.
