Hello,

My Fiance and I are new to farm life, we just got our acre of heaven a little while ago. My mom, who knew that I couldn't wait to get started on raising chickens, got us two young Rhode Island chickens as a house warming gift. It has been a little over a month and the two little guys/gals have grown like weeds. The only thing is I do not know if they are females or males, one is about four months and one about five. We call the younger one Peeper and the other Banshee, due to the older ones squalling if you look at her/him wrong and the other making sweet little cooing noises.

I took a couple pictures, if I need to post more just ask. Does anyone know if I have two little girls or little boys? Thank you so very much for your help and thanks for this awesome site!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

If they are 4 and 5 months old, they are hens.

Pretty birds! Enjoy them and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. I agree with TwoCrows. You have two hens. If you want some more opinions for your peace of mind, you should post them on our What Breed or Gender Section is This at https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your RIRs.

Both are pullets. Males will have a more developed comb and wattle by now. This is what my male looked like at around the same age:

Quote: Thanks! I've "stalked" this site for answers for awhile now, I'm glad that I finally decided to officially join, lol.
Thanks so much!

Quote: Thanks so much, I'll post anymore breed or gender questions there. I really appreciate it, I have been arguing with myself for days over the genders, lol. I'm shocked at how nice and helpful everyone is here, it's really awesome!

Awesome, thanks for the pic! Now I will know what to look out for when these gals start having chicks.

Thank you! I had a RIR (if that's right, newbie alert, lol) when I was a little girl, but I do not remember her being as pretty as these two.
