Help Please!!!!! My Silkie is paralysed!!!!! UPDATED!! VIDEO!!!

I don't believe that you are dealing with Marek's...but, the thing with Marek's is the bird is not paralyzed as we think of paralysis. They can continue to use the effected limb/limbs for a very long time but, the limp is the first thing that happens. Then, it gets worse and they cannot use the limb at all. They are permanently down.

Silkies skulls are open, especially in the vaulted variety. They really don't feel any different but, the opening is there. This is the same with all the crested breeds. Yes, he can hurt her by grabbing her by the head.

I'm really hoping that your little chick has gotten injured and with time will make a full recovery. It is important to keep her out of harms way until she has time to heal.

Thanks Leadwolf. What makes you believe its not Mareks? I dont know anything about this stuff, so the more I read I go one way then the other. Im totally devastated here.

Ive been crying over my computer because I really love my birds and I have worked so ahrd to keep them healthy as I can. Getting vaccine here in Nova Scotia in nearly impossible. Im so far out in the boondocks that getting a vet to come out would be in the $100s of dollars. I know it was a gamble to hope that it would not show up, but it was a choice I made.

I spoil these birds rotten. they have an immaculate coop. I keep them clean and give them treat 3 times a week. I talk to them and coo and love them up and I get 2 beautiful eggs a day from my older ladies.

I JUST got off the phone with a vat. he said it sounded more like a bacterial infection in the leg, or a sprain. He said give lots of vitamins and give antibiotics when i ahve some!

I hope it works!

Marek's doesn't normally show up with symptoms until the bird is over 10 weeks old...I've never read anywhere that a bird that young has had Marek's symptoms. At that age, a necropsy is normally needed to diagnose Marek's due to lack of external symptoms.

Do as the vet recommended..

I was told .5mls poly vi sol, without iron, daily and 400 ius vitamin E twice daily...that was for a 16 week old bird. I would half the dosage for your chick.

Thanks! Im going to go do that. Polivisol is always sold out around here for some reason, Im going to see if I can order some or see if the local pharmacist can get me some. What kind of vitamin E? The gel tablet?

I called my local pharmacy, they said they could have some poly delivered tomorrow afternoon. I specified the kind without iron. I am also going to see if they have the gel tab E. Thanks again!!

Should I be worried about her leaning over on her side to avoid putting weight on the bad leg when she is sitting?

I don't believe so...she is just trying to get comfy. I really hope she gets better for you soon.

If she was acting like that from birth she may have been born with a odd tendon or something. Just like on Finding Nemo, Nemo was born with a short fin. Maybe, you can put a brace on your little chick's leg, putting it in the right position. Over time muscles and tendons adapt (stretch and tighten)., I myself, since I was around 5 I walked on the front of my feet. Not as extreme as a ballerina but the front pad. Doing that for a long time tightened my calf and its tendons and stretched the front of my legs, doing that so long caused me pain so I went into thereapy to right it and I walk just the same now as I did before but I learned that to keep it from hurting I need ti keep the muscles strong and occasinally stretch. But my point, if your little peeper stretches and tightens the muscles in the right places it might walk better over a bit of time. I hope she gets better and this helps!
