Help, please. Somewhat urgent. Rescued chick advice?

you pretty much described exactly how one of our chicks was. it was taking a really long time to hatch so I helped it out. it was weak at first, and we actually didn't think it would make it. and it had a wound on its abdomen. we put it in with the others, made sure they didn't peck, and put neosporin on its cut. and it got pasted up the first few days, so we dealt with that too. we never did get all the gunk out, and for some reason it still looks more ragged than the others, but it is the same size and has been the loudest since it hatched.

forgot to add that we left it in the bator for the first 12 hours or so to let it gain strength before putting it with the others. this also let the wound dry up so they wouldn't peck it.

This sore spot you are speaking of, is it the naval by chance? Right under the vent?

If so, it's probably too late now, but often if kept in the hatcher with a moist towl, it will asorb.

If it is just a pink little nub now, it may be a "rough naval" and once the chick fluffs up, in a few weeks, the naval will dry up and fall off.

So let the little guy rest aside from the others and I be he'll be fine.

You can try using a damp cloth to wipe the "crusties" off, or just a soft toothbrush to try and brush it off. Just don't let the little guy chill.

Goodluck!

Same thing happened to our last hatchling. We ended up giving him a warm bath under the faucet and wiping him with a wet paper towel. We got the gooey membrane stuff off and popped him back in the 'bator with the humidity for several hours then into the brooder with the others. He's not all fluffy, but he's holding his own.

Great info for future reference, thanks! This little guy's wound is at the top of his right wing - right where the wing joins the body - and I think some skin must have been pulled off during his rough hatch. It doesn't seem to restrict his wing movement and I am hoping it'll heal up fast.

Thanks. He's hanging in there quite well, starting to eat and showing interest in his friends. I may give him a little damp wipedown in the morning.

I appreciate the advice and support!
