Hi I thought you all deserved an update.
We put Elaine on the antibiotic for 5 days. Her poops cleared up immediately. (She was passing these monstrous, yellow, stinky poops that were the consistency of oatmeal. I thought it was just her way, but apparently it was the infection.) A few days in, she sat in the nesting box a couple times--to no avail. I thought it might mean she was continuing to lay internally. : (
As for her butt crust, well, that continued for a bit. But, the next week we went away. When we got back, her vent was PRISTINE.
If she gets infected again, I will re-administer the antibiotics. (The vet gave me a good amount.) Hopefully we can prolong her life this way.
And, she is the sweetest hen! I love hearing her contented chirps.
