Please help me decide what to do! This is a Lt. Brahma chick.it hatched all be itself this morning. I noticed that it was still attached to the egg shell. I left it alone till just now. The sack is bulging out and I am afraid it it hits something or another chic steps on it , the chic may bleed to death. So, do I place a saran wrap pouch around it? Is there any hope of this chic surviving? What should I do?
Gosh that is a weird color for a yolk sac to be. I haven't got a lot of experience but the ones I had that still had the yolk sac attached, the yolk sac was yellow. I almost think your chick has a birth defect, it looks more like organs on the outside or something. Hopefully someone will chime in that knows more than I do. Put a warm wet paper towel all around it except the head to keep it moist and put it in a corner of the incubator where no other chicks will bother it. The paper towel should protect it a little bit too. If it is a yolk sac it will absorb it in a while. I just am not sure that is what it is. Sorry! Keep me updated and good luck! Hatching chicks is stressful!!!!!
Thanks for the post. I too think maybe more is going on here. I wrapped saran wrap around it and it was in the corner until a few minutes ago. It is standing up and peeping it's head off. I guess it knows it is all alone. As it has been moving around the sac or whatever has actually come out even more. My husband got home and said "is that its insides?".
Update: I tied a narrow ribbon around the sac and snipped the whole thing off. The chick is up and running around and playing this morning like nothing was ever wrong! I feel very positive about it's future. Thank you for all the kind words and concerns.
Hows the chick doing.
I have the same thing on a day old turkey.
He hatched on it's own and I noticed a reddish yoke sack.
The next day when I removed him to put in the brooder I noticed it had gotten larger and harder.
Now it became even more larger.
There is definitely yoke in there because it squirts out at times from I guess him rupturing it.
When you snipped it off did it bleed and what was in the sack?
