Hello the other night I fell asleep early when I woke up in the morning I went out to the coop and the door was closed which I hadn't closed the night before and I found a mostly eaten check of 2 months old and 5 other chicks of 2 months old missing one with a partially mangled chest which is still living one with a partially mangled face no beak one of my two ducks missing and a full-size layer missing this morning I found the body of the lair I'm trying to figure out what kind of animal or rodent would be doing this I haven't seen it and I'm trying to figure it out before I decide which kind of action to take any ideas
 
Welcome to BYC. Sorry to hear of your troubles :(

There are several predators that could do that kind of damage. You are not the first chicken owner to make a mistake leading to chicken deaths. I would suggest a tightly secured coop and pen, and a higher security level in terms of closing your birds in when you can not be with them. No matter how many predators you kill, there will always be more.

Rather than trying to guess what predator caused the problem, i agree with 1muttsfan. You could look on the "predators and pests" forum to see what you may be able to do to improve your coop security.

I also agree - check out the predator threads. You can also mention details of the carnage/ photos - they may be able to narrow it down to a certain predator. But, if one got in, others can as well. I would not replace any birds - till you have a Ft.KNOX of safety type coop/ run. If you post photos of run and coop, I'm sure we could also suggest ways to secure it.
