silkies are broody almost all the time ! They will sit rocks if you let them. LOL That being said, they brood more then they lay. If you have a couple because you want to hatch others eggs then I recommend them yes. You will get their eggs too but not every day. I think they are just as hardy as others but being smaller then say, road island reds and some have vaulted skulls ( the bone on top dont close completely) I wouldnt keep them together .
I mean, If you give a full grown silke hen 5-6 eggs you can about guarantee she is going to go sit on them til they hatch. They make wonderful mothers "broodys"
Some birds have top hats "crested"Like the polish and SOME silkies and you never know what you will hatch out. At least I dont think you will. It is perfectly normal for that breed. Have you children ? They are born with the fontanel /scull still open on top so the scull can collapse during birth. Its the same thing except it dont close so giving a bigger chicken may peck them on the head its possible to cause brain damage to them.
they can live together just fine and they can live with smaller breeds or their sized as well Im sure there are people out there that have them living with large breeds too . Its mostly the temperament of your birds. Do they like to peck and fight ? Not a good fit .
what kind do you have there ?Theres a few of them that peck the smaller ones as they eat
what kind do you have there ?
