I have been hatching chicks and geese. Twice now, I have had entire broods suddenly up and die. They'll be fine until I come back and they will be peeping loudly and gasping for breath. Almost immediately all of them will lie down, gasp for breath, peep, and die. Does anyone know what this is and how to help? It's happened with both chicks and goslings.

Like they all die simultaneously?

Pictures of your set up would be helpful. When an entire batch suddenly dies at once it's often fumes from something, or temperature issues. An incorrect heat lamp bulb is often to blame. If it's not one actually made and labeled for poultry, they have a coating that emits fumes that are deadly to birds.

How old were the chicks each time? You said 'when I come back', can you explain? How long were they in the brooder before they got sick and died? Pictures of your brooder set up would be very helpful.
