I was at the funeral for my daughters best friends dad yesterday. He died of a heart attack at the age of 46. He left behind a completely grief stricken wife (who works two jobs), and two teenage boys. He was the house cleaner, the grocery shopper and the cook of the family.
One of the boys(he's 16) has decided to take over the household jobs, including cooking. I'm going to be helping him learn to shop, budget and plan meals. I want to put together some simple (3 or 4 ingredient) crockpot recipes for him, and I would like them to have some sort of variety - not all cream of mushroom soup. I think the one that was recently posted for cranbberry chicken is a good exaple of something simple that will covert to crockpot easily.
I know there are many recipes on the web, but I was hoping for some recomendations for tried and true from you guys.
I only use my crockpot for beans

So if you have some great chicken, pork, or beef, or pasta(?) crockpot recipes please share here.
Thanks,
katy

Here's my easy-peasy fall back one:

Sweet crock pot pork loin:

3 lb piece pork loin ( buy the whole 10 lb loin on sale, have butcher cut it in 3 pieces for 3 meals)
1 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup soy sauce

Place loin in crock pot with fat side down. Pour soy sauce over top. Pack brown sugar on top loin.
Cover. Cook on low 6-8 hours on low.
Sweet and tender meat when you return.

we do the whole pork loin too and seal-a-meal it into thirds.. i dice mine into 1" chunks and put into crock pot with 2 jars of salsa. serve with flour tortillas and beans with cheese.. can top with sourcream or guacamole if you like .

My favorite quick meal is spaghetti. I use canned or jar sauce when I'm in a hurry (love Classico's florentine sauce) but I brown a few Italian sausages, then slice them up and throw them in the sauce to simmer until cooked through. Pour over angel hair pasta (cooks in 5 mins but do not rinse the noodles! This will keep the sauce from sticking to the pasta) top with mozzarella cheese, YUM!

A family favorite here is chinese crockpot chicken. A whole family package of chicken legs or thighs and 1/2 cup WHITE sugar and 1/2 cup soy sauce and 1 teaspoon garlic salt.Cook on low for 6 hours.I serve with chiken rice a roni and either salad or corn.BIG hit here.

I also do a WHOLE chicken in the crockpot.Make sure giblets are out and cook with just a boullion cube inside.both kids ADORE this.I serve with salad ,rolls and corn. Cook 4-6 hours. 4 hours on high 6 on low.Easy easy, hope that helps.

these are great I appreciate the help, keep them coming I want to get 4 each of chicken, beef, pork and was wondering if there were any crockpot pasta recipes out there.

Is anybody here familiar with a rice cooker. I don't have one but it seems I remember my niece had one that she kept cooked rice in for a long time (days)?
Also notice most recipies are for 6 hrs. Do newer crock pots come with timers to shut off? Or is it even necessary? Say like they are gone from the house 8 hrs?
Would they need to set crock on a timer?

I'm sorry for your loss. Here are a couple tried and true crock pot recipes we use.

Welfare Stew

1 head cabbage, chopped
1 can diced tomatoes
1 can tomato sauce
sprinkling of cumin
1 lb hamburger meat, cooked and drained

combine in crock pot, cook all day until cabbage is cooked down.

Pulled Pork

This is a huge hit with my kids

1 pork loin roast
1 pkg pulled pork seasoning (comes in little packs in seasoning section)
hamburger buns

seasoning needs vinegar, brown sugar and oil. Allow to cook all day in crock pot, and serve on hamburger buns

At our local walley world you can get Taco Seasoned frozen ground turkey in one pound rolls usually priced at 2 for $2.00. In a large crock pot, 3-4 rolls ground turkey, 2 large cans rotelle or diced tomatoes, water. Cook all day then add 2-3 cans bushes chili beans before serving. If you use dried beans, soak the night before and throw in at begining with turkey. This is a cheap and hearty recipe and since the turkey already is seasoned it makes it extra easy. If you have beef or chicken stock on hand intead of water it makes it even better. God Bless.
