Just discovered one of three chicks that had hatched two days ago, is missing the skin and feathers on top of her head. It looks like it was just peeled back. It was fine this morning so I don't know what happened. It looks like maybe she got stuck somehow and the skin ripped back, although that's just a guess. I took her out because there was still some wet blood at the base of her neck. It's all dried now, but wondered if I should put her back with her Mom or keep her in the house under my heat lamp? Would her Mom peck at it? Also had a chick hatch today that had trouble getting out and its legs seem weak. Can't stand and I'm thinking its legs were in a cramped position in the shell.

I'm in CA and would sure like to talk to someone about all this. If anyone would like to call me collect, I'll be glad to give you my number. Or my email address is [email protected]. Thanks!

Yes your hen will pick at a wound. I don't know alot about chickens as I am new but if you change your title to help needed with injured chick, or something like that then you might get more help. Sorry I can't help you more.

I would bring them both inside together under a heat light. Put them on medicated food,a nd if the wound gets worse you will need to get medication for the water. Hope they are doing ok.

keep your chick separate from all the others and make sure she is warm enough... put triple antibiotic on the wound after throughly cleansing it with sterile saline: you can make this yourself by boiling 1/4 tsp salt in a quart of water for five minutes (make fresh daily) . Do not return the chick with the others until completely healed and keep it inside as flies will come and you will want to avoid nay eventual maggot problem.
