Need Help Please.....I have a small flock. About two weeks ago noticed many of them coughing...some worse then others. Tried herbal things like rosemary, cinnamon, etc. and it didn't help. Last Saturday I started the whole flock on Ocytetracycline in their water and continued with herbal things also. I am not seeing any change. Today a couple of my cochins seems a little worse. Sneezing, coughing, breathing with mouth open. Upon closer look it appears that they have a lot of saliva in their mouths(if that makes since) Their noses and eyes seem fine. They have been eating and drinking this whole time. The cochins are the worse but a couple others are coughing and close their eyes often. What can I do at this point? I am surprised the antibiotics haven't helped. I mixed 1 tsp/ gallon and have changed their water often

What brand of Oxy do you have? The Durvet brand dosage is 2.5 tablespoonful per gallon (see below.) Other brands are different. You could be dealing with a virus such as infectious bronchitis, which would have to run it's course. There are also thos caused by molds or stuffy dusty air, which would not respond to treatment. Here is a good link to read about the common respiratory diseases, such IB, MG, coryza, ILT, and aspergillosis: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044

Did you just recently buy your oxytetracyline? If so, can you do me a huge favor and tell me about how much you have already used (in teapoons) and measure out the rest of the bag by tablespoons? I suspect you might not be giving enough.

I am not 100% positive, but I think the Durvet site ha a typo and that the dose is *not* 2.5 tablespoons. Had someone in OK measure it out in tablespoons and she said their were 18 tablespoons in her bag, which means one tablespoon weighs about 10 grams, so if I have done my math correctly, the 800mg dose is 1.5 tablespoons.

I couldn't be positive but I wanna say about 14-15

Okay, thanks, you and the gal in OK have saved me the cost of buying a bag, lol.

It's possible that they have a virus, which antibiotics won't help, or a bacterial infction that's resistant to oxytetracyline. I guess it's also possible that they didn't drink enough, so didn't get enough medication. One on the drugs I really like s Baytril, but it's banned for use in poultry, so one should look into that before buying it.

Any chance you could take the sickest to a vet and have them look at a nasal swab under the scope?
