Help! Predator ID needed

s.joan99 :

Thanks everybody. Does anyone know --do hawks then just kill for the fun of it, or is something interrupting it before it can eat? Could the other rooster have come to the rescue?

Hawks will kill for food, not sport. They will probably never finish a whole carcass because if they get too full they will have difficulty flying. Typically they eat their fill (which likely isn't much) and leave, if they aren't disturbed during the process. Usually once the head and such is gone, then the bird ate what it needed and left. If a hawk is interrupted, the body will not have had much damage to it.

Hawk experts: is the classic hawk circle of feathers that has been mentioned in this forum? I think this was a dove. There has been a Redtail hawk hanging around killing 2 of my layers and the neighbors' rooster
