When I got home from work, I found one of our hens looked like she had poop on her butt. Upon closer inspection, it was very red and swollen and looked like part of her rectum was protruding. It almost reminded me of a hemrhoid. She had laid an egg in the nesting box at some point. She kept straining like she was trying to lay an egg or poop. I didn't know what to do, so I used vaseline and tried to push the protruding part back in place. It stayed in for a few minutes and then part of it protruded again. I left her alone since it was dark and she was on the roost. What should I do for her? Can a vet fix it?

Usualy once a chicken prolapses it will happen again and again.

I am sorry that you are dealing with this. I has this happen to me yesterday and it has not been fun. If you do a search on this site for prolapsed vents or prolapsed oviducts you can find a lot of information. I have ended up sequestering her to a dog crate with fresh water and minimal food. I gave her a warm bath and gently pushed the oviduct back in, but she is still pushing it out. I don't think the prognosis for mine is very good, but it sems that this usually can be dealt with and managed. I'm new to all this and just trying to learn from it all.

Here is the link to my ordeal. I'm sorry my dear!
