HELP - Prolapsed Vent

This happened to me a few weeks ago. Her poop an vent froze im not sure for how long but i brought her in ever since. She could only poop threw a very small hole
Since the scab from it all coveted most of the vent. It was like all hard an dry looking. I finally got the hard big scab off yesterday. I used witch hazel with 14% alcohol it seem to help an not sting. And also coconut oil around the vent. I almost had to put her down because it just made it harder an harder for her to poop an i cant wipe her vent every time she poops. If theres a lot of scabbiness around the vent try not to mess with it to much let it dry up as much as possible. Thats what i did an it made it so much easier to take it off with very little bleeding. Once removed i put witch hazel an than petroleum jelly.good luck!

I have had some very severe and scabbed prolapses in the past form other chickens pecking at it. This can take some time to fix. When it is as clean as it can be push it back in so that the muscles do not get too used to hanging out there. If she recovers, keep an eye on her as she will be more prone to getting it. Prep h was very helpful with the swelling in my cases, and when I would use antibiotic ointments i would always put something moisturising like vaseline or prep h over it so that it wouldnt dry out, because one the tissues dry out its not good. letting the scabs dry doesnt seem like a bad idea tho because if you could pull them off after they dry new tissue should emerge just under it.
And to second what the above poster said, give her calcium
Good luck!

*Soak 3 update*

She's been eating and drinking her vitamin water, strength is much better then this morning... walking around well vs falling over this morning.

I soaked her in the chlorhexidine diluted solution for 15 minutes and then lightly rubbed to clear off the area w/a washcloth to try to debride the area. While I did this, she was trying to 'push' and pooped. The side area that I saw 'seeping' the poop earlier had opened up more and she is passing poop from there. (See red arrow in pic below).
Then tried to clear whatever is in what i thought was her vent (red circle in post #5 above, and blue arrow in pic below)... but it wouldn't dislodged, just seemed to break off a little bit at a time, so I left it.
I rinsed her well, then dried her off w/ a towel and blow dried. Sprayed Vetericyn, then slathered coconut oil over it. She is now dozing next to me wrapped in a towel until she is fully dried.

I have placed new water w/nutridrench in her pen and crushed up a rolaid and added it to her food for when I put her to bed. I'll be covering her pen completely from 8pm to at least 8am.. then partially during the majority of the day.

She doesn't seem to be in distress, and is much better than when I found her this morning... I spoke to hubby and told him we were going to have a house chicken again when he gets back from business travel....I'm "lucky he loves me" :love

Thank you!
Do I have to debride all of the dead tissue before I try to push her prolapse back in? Doesn't seem right to push dead tissue back in... especially when I'm not even sure where to push back in from since it almost seems like there are two vent areas with the way this is working out..... :/

Thank you Chelseyb123!
I'm wondering if it is a big scab and the soaking is dislodging it a bit and causing the 'second' vent area that showed up more pronounced after the 3rd soaking....

Did you do soaking treatments as well, or just let the area dry out and scab off?

You are doing everything you can for now. How your girls vent is now is the same as mine. Only little by little it would come off of it for the first couple days of bathing. Good thing you stopped because tearing an bleeding could occur and make it worse. But After the first couple days and some good soaks in the tub i left her alone for a couple days anf only tried my best to wipe the vent and make sure it was clear enough for her to poop threw out the day. since she would make squawking noises when she was having trouble. But shes always acted normal and ate and drank fine. Shes been inside since the 3rd i believe. But its still going to be a long recovery. so you to will be having a house chicken for probably the next month or so. But keep up the good work and keep a close eye on it. :)

I just had a hen with a prolapsed vent and was also egg bound that looked like this. She was young but I seriously thought she was going to diem. A soft shelled egg was stuck and I had to literally pull it through her abdominal wall (so I guess she had a hole right through her oviduct) but I knew if I didn't she would die. I simply put her in antibiotics for 5 days and kept her warm and fed and left her alone. Black tissue formed around the vent and I was sure she was going to be a goner but its been a month and she's all healed up and out with her friends and you cant even tell anything was wrong.

Also mine wasnt as pronounced as yours. At first it really looked like a big ball of black poop froze on the vent. Than bringing her inside an bathing her and that big chunk fell off it looked more like tissue an poop. Its scabbed on the inside an outer vent all around it. I did soak but i did leave it alone this past weekend and than bathed her monday left it alone tuesday and than yesterday i soaked her vent for about 10mins with warm water an witch hazel. I felt it was dry enough to remove since it was peeling up after her bath. It came right off an opened the vent back to normal with very little bleeding at all. But the scab on the inside is still there. Im still continuing to wipe her vent an clean it out as good as i can an than appling petroleum jelly to it after.but its a job of its own. Puttinf my girl down was an option on tuesday but things came up an we didnt get around to it. good thing since i got the scab off yesterday . But its still going to be a process until the skin is healed completely. Sorry if im rambling on lol but ive been dealing with the same thing right now an im new to chickens as well ive only had mine since August last year. But not to alarm you but putting her down maybe in the best interest IF she doesnt show any signs of improvement. Its going to take time, effort and some nose plugs for her to fully recover and hopefully she does. But like i said your doing everything you can keep an eye on it if shes having trouble pushing a nice gentle wipe of the vent to remove some blockage can go a long way.
