help? quail has been scalped

in this circumstance, i totally agree with twocrows. i have witnessed first hand what a beak injury can do to a bird. i had a chicken with a beak injury that REFUSED pellets and grains for weeks until the tear healed over. i had to feed her soft mash and cooked veg and even then she would turn her head until she was desperate. there are vessels and nerves that run the length of the beak, this is how they find food and this is how they tell if something isnt food. they can feel pressure and pain- just like the tip of a finger.

the base of my pen is sand (i live near the beach). i add in rocks and branches as enrichment. i put in weeds, small bird seed, fresh veg, shells, pellets and let them dig around to find what they want. the base of part of my pen is concrete and straw. they do not stand on wire. they are not caged. i can freely move around inside the pen and they come up to me and sit on my feet. this is the first act of aggression i have had *touch wood* in any of my flock as the males are meat, the females are for eggs. this is the first injury i have had wear ive needed to seperate someone out.

thankyou to those who have given me sound advice on this problem. if you clip beaks, thats fine. please continue. do whatever works for you, just remember that we are all in different situations and in different countries so what works for you may not work for someone else. or it may be illegal.

I have been made to regret tying to give someone advise. Thanks so much. Also for both I never once said debeak the birds, not once, but no one ever read that part did they. I gave the same sound advice that cornell university has given, but then again what do they know. Just for the record there is as many nerves in that part of the beak as in your finger nail that you cut None. But from now on I let you guys give advise so I can sell more quail when they lose theirs.

That is one of the problems with this site. You try to help people and you get attacked.I have since learned to shut my mouth and let them learn on their own.Even though you have probably been threw the same circumstances and want to help others that are going thru it now. They seem to want to make you feel that your experience is not valid enough for them. They why does anyone bother to get on here and ask for help when you are going to refuse valid info and refuse the help?IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GET HELP,DON'T ASK!SCgamebirds your advise is the right advice and if done correctly, clipping a beak will not effect the bird in any way.It grows back just like your fingernail does.Cut the tip of the beak so you get just a trickle of blood and no more.

look, just because someone offers advice, doesnt mean that i have to take it. i have tried to explain what and who the aggression is caused by. im not going to mutilate my birds just because someone says to. i have had a harmonious flock until a single male reached puberty and started posturing. this male has since been culled.

i asked for help on treating an injury. i didnt want to start a riot over it. i have treated the injury. so be it.

Thanks for the support Tony. But yea that has pretty much turned me off from helping. Your exactly right except I put my glasses on (eye sight just isn't what it used to be) and try to cut just before the quick so to speak. But occasionally I do get it, but I guess let them learn the hard way, gamebirds can be mean and once it starts it will continue unless there is some intervention. Thanks for sticking up

These forums are not for one particular person to stand up and say that they have the complete answer. It is for everyone to chime in and the person that started the thread can make their own decision. There is no need to feel shmited because no one takes your advice. People ask questions, people post their opinions and then the starter of the thread make their own assement. That is that. If a person is going to post here on these threads, you have to understand that many people may not take your advice. Be an adult.

Then fine take all the help you can get,but if you don't feel it will help your situation, don't say a word. But most people feel the need to start an argument over anything. And as far as the one person line, sometimes that's all it takes is 1 person, but you still should listen to everyones advise. It is supposed to be a helpful site.Well that's what I used to like about this site, but many people have changed my views.I still love to visit here as much as I can but I have learned to keep my advice to myself and let them learn the hard way.And with that said I will say no more on this thread but will continue to read post.
