Help! Random dogs- how can I scare them away?

Same thing happened to me! the neighbors dog got in and was attacking the chickens and the children and he blamed us for letting them in the yard to attract his dog!!

Its one thing if you do your due diligence as a pet owner and a dog digs under a fence or rips through wire then I say kill it whatever it is, but its a whole nother story if you got your chickens where random dogs can walk right up to them, then its kinda like baiting a trap especially if you live next to a public park where people take there dogs. As a pet owner you have a responsibility to protect your animals and it sounds like from what I read your not living up to that if a great dane is able to stroll right up on top off your cages. All you people so ready to shoot someones pet is concerning to me maybe you do protect your animals to the point that it would be necessary but from this persons description there not doing that and shooting someones animal in that situation, well Id have to say its down right evil. I know if you shot my dog I might just kill you at the very least Id assualt you with my full force, and I know alot of people are like me. Im not trying to be a jerk, I am genuinely concerned. And just so yall know after I shot that guy I dragged him into the street and stood on top of him until the police came and took him away, Im over 21 so I have every right to be drunk inside my house I dont even drink often I was just trying to make the point that I wouldnt have under ordinary circumstances shot the guy. This is Texas...Im an American...and I know my rights so dont mess with my dog lol.

I know my rights as well. And if your dog is on top of my coop or jumping on the fence or trying to dig under, then I'm allowed (and encouraged by Animal Control/Sheriff's Office) to shoot it. That is the law here in AR. In some states, you have to wait until the dog has a bird in its mouth and is doing harm. In other states, running around and scaring the birds (causing loss of egg production from stress) is enough reason to shoot. Here, looking like the dog that caused a problem last week is probable cause for deadly force.

If you come onto my property, threatening me because I shot your dog, it's pretty darn likely that you will be joining him. And I don't use rocksalt in my guns. That would send me to jail for assault (or animal cruelty). If I have reason to pull a firearm, it's for deadly force only.

ETA: I read the OP as having a coop and run, but sometimes free-ranging. When I free-range, no the yard isn't fenced. Not allowed to do it since we rent. If a dog enters my property, then it's chased off. No reason what-so-ever for a dog to be in my yard. That would be like saying that it's ok for my neighbor's dog to poop in my yard since I don't have a fence.

Whoa, people, let's back off of talk of shooting humans, can we? That's over the top and inappropriate. The law usually gives the chicken owner the right to shoot the dog harassing livestock on the flock owner's property, but it certainly does NOT give the dog owner the right to shoot that flock owner over the dog. Let's get back on track here, please. If this type talk keeps up, we'll have to close the thread.
