HELP! Religious subjects.......

You would be surprized how much children understand about Jesus. They have a childlike understanding, while adults let their intellect
get in the way of their childlike faith.

Totally not my experience.

Ok, so she is just starting at the school, 1/2 into the school year (?), and the teacher wants her to "catch up" on the memory verses the other kids have already learned? That makes more sense. I would do it slowly with her, so she doesn't get overwhelmed, instead of trying to cram all the verses on her at once.

I agree, and you need to ask the teacher how long the other children had to memorize the verses. Seems like a reasonable amount of time should be available; if htey were originally given a verse a week, then maybe doing two per week is about as much as can be expected, especially since there will probably be other verses assigned as time progresses.

If you work with her on one verse of Scripture a day.....she will have them all memorized in a 26 day period. One verse, one line at a time. It's not to much for a child or adult to learn. My kids can pop out Scripture left and right (ages 10 to 18). We, as a family, learned entire chapters. Psalm 121 is our favorite. All of those that you listed are all great verses for young kids to start out with. Read Proverbs 22:6 and as for the King James Bible....it's easy as ABC. Just remember when you read a Scripture one day and get a certain meaning, the next time you read it you may get something else from it. That is what I love about the Bible. All of lifes instructions in one book.

Get a chalk board or one of those dry erase boards where you can write on and wipe off (Even if your DD can't read this will help YOU

).

Write the verse or phrase of the verse on the board. Over mealtimes or other times (does DD help you in the kitchen?) when you are together. You read the verse together, with you pointing to each word as you go at least some of the time.

After you have done this a few times, erase a word (an easy one like the or and or something easy to remember). Then repeat the process a few times. Erase another word. Same thing.

This breaks down memorization into a slow process where you only have to remember one NEW thing at a time.

This is how we did it in Sunday school when I was a kid.

and yes, for Mat 7:7 you would say, "Mathew seven, seven." To help her understand how the Bible is put together you can also say "The Book of Mathew, chapter seven, verse seven" until she figures out what all those numbers and things mean. (you can show her in your bible how each verse is labeled...I'm assuming even if she can't read yet, she can at least understand the basic principle of how to find verses, and knows numbers etc).

I am a little confused as to why you chose this school for your daughter (one that insists on a Bible translation that you don't understand) instead of other schools. I would think that a Christian school that insists on the KJV has some pretty specific beliefs that a parent would be expected to share, to ensure student success. But that is probably off topic.

LizFM, she was a public school this past year and she did horrible socially and the school had very poor ratings. It is one of the lower and poverty incomes despite of the good neighborhood we got here. The teachers are all "burned out" and believe it or not, they send all of their kids elsewhere besides public schools. It is a wonder why so many of our public schools are suffering while the private and magnet schools are doing so well!

We got on the list for her to go to one of the excellent magnet schools and there were 200 people waiting on the list and only one will be selected radomly by a computer. We have about five other magnet schools and they are full as it is. The only solution is the Christian School, or religious schools and private schools. So we decided for general religion since we are Christians (Methodist earlier years) and hubby is not religious at all but respectful in letting our DD choose.

Reason why is that her previous school is not giving the challenges that my DD needs. She was so bored, got into trouble alot which her teacher told us that she was "easily influenced" by others and there were NO structure or disclipine in that school. She sassed us, cussing, bad mouthing that we do not use any of the words in our home (yes we do make mistakes but told her that it is not appropriate to say that word) and the common thing, "stupid this, stupid that" "everything is stupid" etc. Soooo, we looked around and found one that my Mom called and we communicated and was pleased in the fact that the school teaches the OLD WAY and it worked for them and uses the religion time as part of the structure in school and teaches kids to be a better role model for others. I must say in the last four days, there has been less of the old bad habits she picked up from the old school into the new school. And she is saying her prayers at mealtimes which it is a good one for us, even hubby respectfully bowed his head and tuned out. (sorry folks, that is the way he is).

And learning the verses is not her only problem but the writing of block, like you see here, no tails on each letter. Her old school taught the "tails" method on the print letters so it would be easier for the kids to learn cursive writing. The new school said there is no proof that it helps the kids write cursive and I was one of the old school and I didnt have to put tails on each letter. Believe me, I like the block ABCs because you do not see cursive block letters in reading books! I just do not see the purpose of having tailed letters either. I like to print without tails! However my DD did start off with block letters without tails at PreK and then when she went to the public school, they had to teach her all over again that it is "wrong" and put an "X" on those letters that were blocked. Oh the frustration my DD had! Now she learned her ABC's with tails and now have to revert back to the block ABC's. This time, she threw a royal fit and X X X on every letter I tried to show her and she yelled "It is WRONG, Mommy! We do not write that way!" May God grant me patience! I will keep on trying to revert her back to the print type.

So I will see one verse at a time will work for her. She should decide if it is too much in one day. It seems like both of us would be educated LOL!

My Dad is bringing his own modern Bible for me to read. He got alot of books about the Bible and many of them were companions of the Bible, their footnotes and so forth.

Learning a connected series of verses is far easier than the same number of words from random passages.

You're right, it is easier, didn't pay close enough attention! Theresa

Good going reading Bible stories to your daughter, EweSheep!

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God..." (2 Tim. 3:16) This means that when the Bible was being written, God breathed His words into the minds of the people writing it. I know your daughter needs encouragement in her memorization, so tell her that God actually wrote this book for us hundreds of years ago. He wrote it to show His love, so we can read it and love Him too! May the day come when your daughter is thankful for the time you spend with her teaching her about God. May she be able to say, "I know why God wrote the Bible. He wrote it because He loves me!"

She does ask interesting questions such as why did Cain killed Abel? Why did Noah flood the earth? (well it was not Noah that flood the Earth but it was God). I ask her where is God, she smiled and said He is UP there, pointing her finger in the sky. God can be everywhere, that is for sure!

I will do her verses later this morning and sing song those verses. I know she loves to sing so that should help her along!

God, if you are listening to me, please be patient with me while I read your words to my DD! And grant me patience as well even to the complex questions I do not know.
