Help securing free range chickens..

I love the idea of every other day! That shows them, huh? We are definitely changing up our routine. The chickens lay their eggs everywhere and anywhere. We live on their schedule not the other way around. I’ve been working out of town so I know my husband has done his best but he’s not known for his structure. We’ll both be home full time starting next month and we are going to pull it together so I can say it’s been a while since we lost one.
I prolly do get to close to our pets; some are closer than others but Molly was special. She was our first chicken, first egg layer, she ran to us to pick her up and rode by us in the side by side! She just had a bunch of personality.
Of all the chickens I've owned, I've only had one that I could pick up & pet, and she's in the run right now with 4 more, all born the same day, 9+ weeks ago. They're Buff Orpingtons, bought from the local Southern States co-op @ a couple days old. Supposed to all be pullets, but one cockerel snuck in there. From the beginning, this one little pullet, who I've been calling Sandy, has seemed friendly, to the point that she'll actually walk up to me on the little deck just outside the pop door, waiting for my attention. Kinda neat, actually. There's one other pullet that's showing signs of coming around. The cockerel is a nipper, any chance he gets; gotta figure a way to get him out of that.

The lot of them like to squeeze onto that little deck at bedtime, rather than go on in to the coop. I've waited 'til there's just enough light to still see, and finally have to go out and literally stuff them all through the door; getting old quick, 'specially in the rain. The run's fairly secure, with netting over the top, so they'd probably be fine overnight, but I'm not inviting trouble.

I used to let the birds free range in our pasture but one time there was a fox out during the day and killed some of my birds, but this was several years ago, so now I only let them out when I know I'll be out there maybe working on the coops and pens. I have had some special birds over the years. Currently it is Gladys. Sometimes she will want me to pick her up and she sometimes goes for a ride on our tractors. She normally would have been culled but slipped through and now she is going on 3 years old and a pet. Gladys has a crossed beak.

Awe! How sweet! Sandy, I love the name! Molly was like that too when she was little! She would run up to us to be held! Even the day she disappeared I had just carried her around and snuggles into you and falls asleep.
I’m so glad you still have her and it sounds like the other night come around too! I really appreciate hearing your story. Love come from the oddest places.

I love her and her beak! You are both so lucky to have found each other. Our would sit in the side by side and go for rides with us.
We had two more over the past 4 days go missing and we are sure it is a Fox.
We have 21 guineas and 5 chickens locked in their 16 x 32 coop and they are NOT happy. One 32 side is open to air with a chain link with chicken wire so they are safe but used to roaming.
We are not giving in. We love them enough to try to keep them safe! Thanks everyone for sharing.

Well, thank you. This is the 1st time I've ever experienced this with a chicken! These are the first Orpingtons I've ever been around; don't know if it's a breed characteristic or not. Went out just after daylight this morning to make sure they're alright (they've taken to spending the night on the platform in front of the pop door, on the outside); she came running up to the gate.

My Buff Orington was not so friendly, but motherly and bossy! I guess it is just each birds personality. We recently bought some lavenders and white jersey giants and we are going to do our best to humanize them! We went ahead and got the defender from TSC. I have to say; the man that would first be ok with us buying it and going to pick it up is truly chicken lover at heart.
Our babies have been locked up for 3 days and it’s killing him. We have to do what we have to to ale them happy! ❤️❤️❤️our chickens!

Now we have to install underground fence and we are set.
