Help settle an argument about price of baby chicks...

I sell my day old to 3 weeks old for $4 each or $3 for 10 or more. I have a waiting list...Some people have called me nuts. Saying I should charge $2. I would charge $2 for my mixes, but people cannot tell the difference when they are little and I have them all together in one brooder. I have sold some for less when I was going to have like 2-3 left that were mixes. Good luck...

I have sold my mix breed chicks for 2.00 a chick here so a pure bred will sell for higher. In the spring you can sell for higher than in the winter. I have seen pures go for up to 5.00 a chick and rare breeds even higher. Started pullets always go higher. In the spring you can get chicks at the feed store for about 2.75 a chick but you are getting hatchery chicks and you have to buy 25 at a time here.

You know, in the "old days", many farm neighbors traded goods (my folks traded excess milk for all kinds of stuff!) It's not really the same as being free and I don't think S. CA has a whole lot of farming communities. My folks were dirt poor, too, so they did have a few charitable gifts sent their way from neighbors who had more than enough but again, not the same as chicks being free as the norm.

Anyway, from what I've seen in TN, mixed chicks are currently selling for $1-2, backyard purebred is $2-5, specialized breeders are $3 and up, rare or fashionable breeds can be quite expensive. So no, I don't think $4 is crazy. I do think that unless he's buying them, it's really none of his business.

I'm probably older than yourdad, and I feel that price is very fair if buying from a breeder and getting true Ameraucanas.

As long as they are true Ameraucana that price sounds right.
Now some not all breeders sell Easter Eggers as Ameraucana. So if you don't know the diffrence study now so you don't get ripped off.
Can you get pics of the Ameraucana so you can see if they are realy Ameraucana?
As to Barred Rock if they where better looking then the hatchery ones then I would pay more for them.
If not im sure plenty of locals will have them for cheaper.

I do alot of bartering with chicks. I have one lady that is offering maybe a steer or buffalo for some day olds. Someone else is offering 1/2 cord of wood for some...craigslist has a barter section here...so i always go on there.
