Hello Backyard Chickeners!

I've searched all over the forums and am a little confused about how to determine the gender of my Cochin. Some say it's hard to tell until they're older because they mature slowly, others say if there's any red in the comb early on, you've got a roo. Googling "sexing a cochin" brings up some pretty um, not relevant information.

In this picture, the cheeper is six weeks to the day. The red starting coming in over the last week or so and s/he does have a poof of saddle feathers coming in, it looks like. But then, Cochins have lots of feathers all over.

I live in a city where it just became legal to keep four birds (with a million restrictions on where the coop can be) and neighbors who aren't that chicken-friendly. If this lass is a lad, I'd like to know sooner rather than later. If it's too early to tell, when can you usually tell with a Cochin?

Thanks in advance!!

Yup.

Dagnabbit. I thought you all might say that. Is it the red at 5 to 6 weeks that's the dead giveaway? Or the big old poof of saddle feathers? Both?

It is the most aggressive and inquisitive of the four, but I know this young that's not a true sign of maleness.

And thanks, they are all beautiful. We just moved into this house and just got our first chickens, but I can't wait to move on to somewhere we can have more! I want some RIRs and some laced Wyandotte and some barred plymouth ladies and some...

Saddle feathers are not visible in the pic, it's the large red comb and wattles that give away his sex at this age.

Ok, thanks everyone!

I'm new to this and just realized I posted in the wrong forum. Sorry about that and thanks very much for the feedback!
